What owners report

Owners of the 1994 Volvo 850 report a wide spread of problems on a car that is now decades old; fuel leaks at the tank and stalling or sudden loss of power while driving come up most often in complaints. Many reports describe recurring, hard-to-reproduce faults that mechanics could not duplicate, and the fuel tank leaks are frequently tied to the 2004 recall for this model year.

  1. Fuel system

Fuel smell and leaks at the tank / heat shield mount

    • 12 complaints (14%)
    • median 130,000 mi at 15.3 yrs old (5 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2001–2018

Owners describe a gasoline smell, sometimes for months, and visible fuel on the driveway or under the car. Mechanics find leaks and cracks at the tank seams or at the points where the heat shield attaches, and in several cases a replacement tank was fitted. Some owners say they were told their vehicle identification number was not covered by the fuel tank recall even though the leak was in the same place the recall describes. Reports span roughly 52,000 to 200,000 miles, and several mention hot-weather states.

    Recall 04V368000

What to check: Ask whether the fuel tank recall (04V368000) was performed and get the paperwork; if not, look and smell for fuel around the tank and where the heat shield bolts on before buying.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“On june 1, 2004, my 1994 Volvo 850 was leaking gas on my driveway. The car was towed to Volvo village in clearwater for repair and they replaced the gas tank. I paid $790. I learned on 2/1/05 that there was a recall for Volvo 850 for the gas tank, recall r139, involving 226,000 Volvo 850s including my 1994 year. Recall number: 04v368000. Make : Volvo model : 850 year : 1994 manufacturer : Volvo cars of n.a. Llc. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10108431, filed 2005-03, 80,354 miles

“I have had the smell of gas and evidence of leaks at the gas tank for about two years plus. I called Volvo two years ago about the recall (NHTSA # ea03008 from july/2004). I was told that my car VIN does not match the recall. I just had the tank pulled by my mechanic and it is a plastic tank which is leaking from the 3 bolts which attach it to the heat shield- exactly as described in the recall- and it has been operated in a hot weather state(tx). This should be included in this recall. What could possibly exclude this from recall. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10415678, filed 2011-07, 130,000 miles
  2. Electrical system

Engine stalls or loses power while driving

    • 9 complaints (11%)
    • median 122,722 mi at 11.9 yrs old (4 state mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1995–2008

Complaints describe the engine cutting out at speed, on turns, while accelerating or decelerating, and at idle, with no warning; several owners say the car restarted after a few minutes. Multiple shops and dealers were unable to duplicate or diagnose the fault, and suggested repairs did not resolve it. Some owners connect it to throttle or engine control electronics. Mileage in the reports ranges from about 80,000 to 268,000 miles, with no clear pattern in conditions.

What to check: Ask for any service history on stalling, throttle body or engine control module work, and test drive at low speed and through turns to see whether the engine falters.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Recently read an article in USA today about Volvo's stalling, losing speed and etc. That perfectly describes my problem with my 1994 Volvo 850 sedan. Over the last 2 years we have had very similar occurrences with our car losing speed and dying in traffic. After each incident it has restarted after a couple of minutes and will not repeat the failure with any frequency. I have had the car to my mechanic and to a Volvo dealership. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10131600, filed 2005-08, 120,000 miles

“I am having problems with my car cutting off while driving. Strangely, first it started out cutting off whenever I would make a right turn. The car would just cut off, all the lights in the dash would come on. I have had three auto repair places look at it. Of course I was advised to do several things which they thought would fix the problem. It did not. Well the lastest and worst happened on 8/6 when the car cut off while driving and on a busy street. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10133654, filed 2005-08, 125,444 miles
  3. Fuel system

Throttle sticking or high idle, especially in cold weather

    • 5 complaints (6%)
    • median 200,000 mi at 15.0 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • filed 1995–2009

Complaints describe the accelerator not returning to idle, leaving the car feeling as if it is accelerating on its own; one owner said a dealer offered a throttle body service as the remedy. Others mention stalling at speed and cold-weather throttle icing, which is also the subject of a 1994 recall for this model year. Reports range from shortly after purchase to around 200,000 miles, with several noting very cold conditions or the winter months.

    Recall 94V173000

What to check: Ask whether the cold-weather throttle recall (94V173000) was completed, and check that the accelerator pedal and linkage return freely when released in cold weather.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Transmission did not engage in reverse. Car rolled forward when parked on hill; thinking that it needed more gas to go backwards I accelerated, gear engaged after five seconds sending car backwards surprisingly fast. This slippage in reverse reoccurs about 70% of the time. If a pedestrian was either at the front or back of my car this defect could have LED to an accident.”

    NHTSA complaint #704906, filed 1999-03

“Engine heater block contact surface does not match correctly with the engine block as intended.,vehicle speed control, cold weather condition ice crystals can form at the throttle in the engine intake system, prevent throttle from returning to idle. Fuel system , the fuel tank may seep or leak fuel at the onto where the heat shield is attached. These are potential problems and need to be fixed no matter if a ticket is opened or not.”

    NHTSA complaint #10253985, filed 2009-01, 200,000 miles
  4. Air bags

Airbag warning light and unexpected deployment

Mentioned in 4 of 54 sampled complaints

Owners report the SRS warning light coming on, sometimes after the centre console or steering wheel got wet, followed in some cases by the driver's airbag deploying without an impact. One owner describes the horn contact material in the steering wheel breaking down, leaving horn wiring next to the airbag assembly; dealers ran tests but described the cause as undetermined. Reported from low mileage up to about 240,000 miles, often after water intrudes near the console.

What to check: Check that the SRS light goes out after the bulb-check sequence on start-up and ask whether the airbag system has been inspected; look for water staining around the console.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I own a 1994 Volvo 850 sedan. I was parked on a busy downtown portland st. And got in my car, turned on the ignition and my airbag deployed. It was so loud I thought I had been shot. (as did passersby) my car filled with what I thought was smoke (due to gunpowder smell) and got out quickly. I was very distraught and in shock...my arms and chest had burns and cuts and bruises instantly. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10238103, filed 2008-08

“The console and steering wheel were wet from rain. The srs dash warning light came on. About 5 miles after that, the driver's side air bag deployed. The bag was the original bag. The srs light had gone on once 20 months before when the console got wet. The dealership ran a test for about $115 each on both occasions and said the cause of the srs light coming on was indeterminate. Twenty months ago a top, longtime Volvo dealership service manager assured me that air bags never go off without an impact. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10471432, filed 2012-08, 240,000 miles

Buying note. On a car this old, the practical checks are the fuel tank recall paperwork and any sign of fuel seepage, plus a long test drive to catch intermittent stalling. Budget for age-related electrical and cooling work, and treat the heated seats with caution until you have confirmed they behave normally.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 54 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? Example complaints

Fuel system: “I have a 1994 Volvo 850. I have a leak where the heat shield is attached to the gas tank. Volvo is well aware of this problem but my VIN does not show the recall. The leak of gas is 100% from the recalled spot heatshield side of the gas tank. This is a safety issue because it could blow back on the exhaust and cause a fire.”

NHTSA complaint #11144772, filed 2018-11

Electrical system: “I believe it's the electronic throttle control. I've had the part replaced and yet the car still runs poorly. It stalls, looses speed, and quits running all together. It is a very serious and dangerous situation.”

NHTSA complaint #10161814, filed 2006-07, 80,000 miles

Engine cooling: “Stalls all the time mechanic can't find problem this has been going on for about two years. It stalls at 60mph and it stalls while idling. It stalled 7 times going a total of 4.5 miles. Help”

NHTSA complaint #10238806, filed 2008-08, 268,964 miles

Air bags: “If the crash sensor located in the center console under the original equipment cup holder between the two front seats gets wet it will disable the air bags, and the seat belt will not work. The dealer wants the owner to pay 1158 to correct the problem that he is having with the electrical system, causing the air bag and the seat belt not to work if either function gets wet. …”
