“(1) I was driving my 2000 Bmw 323I on a feeder road, at about 40 MPH. The car has approximately 69,000 miles. (2) the side airbags (driver's side) unexpectedly deployed with no apparent reason (no collision, no road bumps). The engine automatically cut off and emergency lights automatically went on. I was able to restart the car, drive it home, and avoid being hit by other cars. (3) I checked the NHTSA website and apparently there had been a recall in 2002 on 2000 Bmw 323I for this very reason. …”

NHTSA complaint #10177428, filed 2006-12, 69,000 miles

“Takata recall. The contact owns a 2000 Bmw 323I. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 19v853000 (air bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. An unknown dealer stated that parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Vin tool confirms parts not available.”

NHTSA complaint #11372816, filed 2020-11, 57,800 miles

“Dt: the contact's vehicle struck a pot hole that resulted in deployment of both sides airbags, and the driver's head restraint. He took the vehicle to a dealership, who replaced the airbags. Afterwards, vehicle experienced a blowout of the driver's side front tire which resulted in deployment of the same airbags. No repairs have been made at this time.”

NHTSA complaint #10143317, filed 2005-11, 48,000 miles

“Takata recall driving around 25 MPH car hit a pothole going straight on a city street. Side passenger airbag deployed hitting my cousin just as described in this recall 02v223000. The car is also affected by the takata inflators airbag recall which thankfully didn't deploy at the time of hitting the pothole. Bmw does not want to take responsibility for the deployed air bags because, according to them, the car's VIN number was not affected by side air bag deployment, even though year and model matches the effected vehicle. They are, however, willing to repair the takata airbag.”

NHTSA complaint #10893030, filed 2016-08, 287 miles

“Recall on airbags in 8/02. Car purchased 9/02. Recall repaired by dealer 11/02. 4/30/05 drivers side curtain and side door air bags deployed unexpectedly. Bmw claiming undercarriage damage after their rep inspected car. This occured because dealership technicians could find no damage.”

NHTSA complaint #10127703, filed 2005-07, 85,044 miles
