“I was driving my car and suddenly the restraint system malfunction light turned on and the seatbelt light turned on. I did not hit a bump or anything. There was no passenger currently sitting on the passenger seat when the light came on. I have tried sitting down on the passenger seat and put on my seat belt to see if it will go away but no luck. Also, the seat belt light will not go away even if I buckle the drivers seat and passenger seat belt.”
NHTSA complaint #10946824, filed 2017-01, 136,298 miles“Upon turning the seat heater on I noticed a burning smell and smoke inside the car. The seat was unusually hot. I felt a burning sensation and pulled over to find that the seat heating element had burned through the leather and two layers of a heavy duty winter coat. When I turned it off the smoke stopped. We took the car to the Bmw dealership and was told it is not part of a safety recall or under warranty. Refused any monetary consideration and wanted $1400 to repair. Considering the car could catch on fire the repair should be considered a safety issue and repaired for free.”
NHTSA complaint #10493782, filed 2013-01, 84,500 miles“Air bag sensor for front passenger seat not working. Replaced once while vehicle under warranty. Same sensor malfunction again. Bmw will not replace unless I pay, cost of replacing sensor over 4,000.00. I believe it should be covered by Bmw since same part is again not working.”
NHTSA complaint #11165539, filed 2019-01“The contact owns a 2008 Bmw 528I. While attempting to utilize the seat heating system, the contact smelled an abnormal burning odor. Upon further inspection, it was noted that the backrest of the driver side seat had a small burn hole. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 04v575000 (seats). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 59,000. ....updated 01/13/16 ; updated 05/10/18”
