“Driving the for 18 miles up a mountain road to a sky resort on snow covered road. Never exceeded 20 MPH because of conditions. During the trip the brake system light came on and screen said use caution. Parked the car at the parking lot, turned it off. Turned it back on and it seemed ok, the error message was gone. Went to our room. 20 minutes later the sheriff calls and said my car is on fire. It was a total loss.”
NHTSA complaint #11185562, filed 2019-03, 120,000 miles“On the night of may 5th, 2017, while I was driving my 2014 Bmw X5, at the mileage of 6800 miles. A burning smell came out first. 2 minutes after the smoke came out. I asked my kids get out of the car. Another 2 minutes later, the fire came out from the bottom of the engine. The fire was too big then we called seattle fire department to extinguish it. So far, geico said this car is totaled. But Bmw north america did not pay too much care with this accident. Just saying the primarily responsibility is geico despite I keep to reminder her my car is under warranty . …”
NHTSA complaint #10992583, filed 2017-05, 6,800 miles“I purchased my vehicle around Labor Day of 2020. I still own and operate the vehicle. Since I have owned my vehicle, I have repeatedly been told my turbos are leaking oil, etc. I have even had several oil leaks repaired on my car. Fast forward six years, and I am buying 5 quarts of oil every two weeks and topping up the oil in my vehicle every week, at least 2-3 quarts per week. I also have smoke coming out of the tail pipes intermittently. The car also smells like it is burning oil, but there are no visible oil drips on the ground currently. …”
NHTSA complaint #11747246, filed 2026-06“The diesel X5 randomly shut off and would not start leaving my wife stranded on the highway. This left my wife without power steering or power brakes. It was acting a little weird a day or so before the issue, but only displayed a generic powertrain warning without storing any ECM codes to assist with diagnosis. After the engine died, the engine stored a low fuel pressure code. The Bosch CP4 high pressure fuel pump failed just outside of the warranty period. Initial repair estimates are greater than $10,000 due to the way the high pressure fuel pump fails.”
NHTSA complaint #11573911, filed 2024-02“I purchased a 2014 BMW X5 on 8/31 Took possession of it 9/7 because the dealership needed to replace tires. On 9/15 while driving for about 3 minutes, the powertrain warning came on my screen and the truck began to shake. I turned around and parked in my driveway and turned the vehicle off. At which time smoke was visible from the engine area. As the smoke began to worsen, flames shot out and I called the fire department for help. I was only in possession of the vehicle for 8 days and the dealership told me that there’s nothing that they can do for me. …”
