Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“I had a failed high pressure fuel pump, which Bmw admits is faulty, and they have an extended warranty for. I had to have it replaced, but since I had it changed out at an independent shop Bmw refuses to reimburse me for it. Just looking to see if there are any options for avenues for reimbursement.”

NHTSA complaint #11339001, filed 2020-07, 90,821 miles

“With only 66,000 miles , this is my second Bmw diesel that requires a replacement scr active tank at a cost in excess of $2,000 so the additive can be measured. The older version of the X5 received a warranty extension, but not the current model even though the problem persists. Shameful.”

NHTSA complaint #11395308, filed 2021-02, 6,000 miles

“Sunroof motor shorted and killed battery at 45,000 miles. Caused drivetrain malfunction. Door molding on rear drivers side door separating. Fuel injectors failed (cylinder 4 and 6) causing drive train malfunction at 55,000.miles”

NHTSA complaint #11172668, filed 2019-01, 55,000 miles

“This 2014 Bmw X5 has a diesel engine. The fuel pump has failed twice in nine months causing the vehicle to suddenly lose power and completely stop. The vehicle was stationary at a stop light both times. However, this can occur while in motion at any time. This diesel engine fuel pump failure impacts entire fuel system which requires a complete replacement (please see attachment for first repair. The car is currently at Bmw service}. This problem will occur again because they keep using the same parts. I am sure with some investigating you will find that this is an unreported problem with Bmw. …”

NHTSA complaint #11112799, filed 2018-07, 65,000 miles

“Almost caused a major accident when High Pressure Fuel Pump failed unexpectedly while driving. Good thing my family was not in car when this happened. This is completely unacceptable and should be recalled on this vehicle just like many others of this model. I have included picture of metal shavings in fuel system from high pressure fuel pump failure.”
