What owners report

Complaints on this model year cluster around airbag warning lamps and the ignition-key recall, with a smaller but consistent group describing engine stalling or quitting while driving and transmission hesitation or slipping. Many reports come from cars well under 100,000 miles, and several owners note dealers could not reproduce the problem or found required airbag parts unavailable.

  1. Air bags

Service Air Bag light / airbag warning on dash

    • 12 complaints (18%)
    • median 96,500 mi at 6.6 yrs old (6 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2014–2024

Owners describe a 'Service Air Bag' message or a passenger airbag indicator that stays lit or comes and goes. Dealers typically read a code for the airbag deployment loop or the passenger presence module, clean connectors, or quote several hundred dollars to replace a sensor, module or seat; several complaints state the needed part was discontinued or on backorder. Some say the warning only appears with a passenger seated and that the system was described as working at the time of inspection. Reported from roughly 1,800 to over 120,000 miles, appearing at widely varied ages and often intermittently.

    Recall 10V414000

What to check: Before buying, turn the key to run and confirm every airbag warning lamp goes out after the self-check, both with the passenger seat empty and occupied. Ask whether airbag-related codes have been read and what parts, if any, were replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Air bag warning light indicating that passenger air bag is in need of maintenance. Advised by pine belt Cadillac that there may be a malfunction and they said they cleaned the connectors. The warning code #b0014 appeared again in november indicating that the connection at the air bag had a poor connection, at which time I responded back to the dealership and was advised that I would have to replace the canister at a cost to me of $608.00. The service person said that the airbag system would not function unless this was corrected. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10662212, filed 2014-12, 64,793 miles

“Takata recall. My psgr airbag light stays on saying psgr airbag off. I saw where certain vehicles were recalled for this. They all have the same problem. Will my vehicle get in the recall or will there be future recalls”

    NHTSA complaint #11122140, filed 2018-08
  2. Engine

Engine quits or stalls while driving

    • 10 complaints (15%)
    • median 41,500 mi at 5.8 yrs old (7 state mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2012–2023

Owners describe the engine cutting out without warning at speeds from about 15 to 65 mph, sometimes needing a restart at the roadside and sometimes not restarting. Dealers in these reports either could not duplicate the fault or found items such as a failed engine control module, a timing chain code, or a needed engine replacement. One complaint mentions a stall followed by a low-speed collision. Reported from about 17,000 to 123,000 miles, with several cases under 45,000 miles and no clear weather pattern.

    3 related service bulletins

What to check: Ask for any stored engine codes and service history, and have a scan tool check for pending misfire or cam timing codes. A cold-start test drive can help reveal rough running or a timing chain rattle.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“My engine light came on code p0008 timing chain issue. Cadillac has a recall on the 3.6 timing chains but my VIN for some reason isn't included. My Cadillac only has 76844 miles on it. The recall they have in place is for 10 years 120000 miles. Again for some reason my car isn't included even tho its the exact same issue and exact same engine.”

    NHTSA complaint #11006009, filed 2017-07, 76,844 miles

“The car shut off while driving down a hill this is the second time it has happened I checked with GM to see if there was a recall for this car and at this time there is not. We were lucky both times that there were no other vehicles around and that the car was kept under control while bringing it to a stop. Although GM has no recalls for this car I am filling this complaint because of the many recalls that are out there for this same problem. …”

  3. Body and structure

Water leaks into cabin / tail light separation

    • 9 complaints (13%)
    • median 55,000 mi at 5.2 yrs old (7 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2012–2023

Owners report water entering through the roof lining and floor, sometimes pooling on the driver's side when parked, and describe mold and damp electrical components afterward. Related complaints note a gap between the tail lamps or liftgate and the body where water collects, and one describes a power liftgate closing on its own. Reported from about 30,000 to 70,000 miles, frequently after rain or when the vehicle is parked outside.

What to check: Inspect the headliner, carpets and spare-wheel well for dampness or water stains after rain, and look for gaps or loose clips where the tail lamps meet the body.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“My rear tail lights for my wagon have separated from the top of the car due to poor design. Spoke with Cadillac & GM, both refuse to believe it's a design flaw on the wagon models. Both stated car out of warranty due to mileage/year. Asked if they could tell me what was used to attach lamps to vehicle, neither has a clue. Dealer wants $2100 to replace, but no guarantee that it won't happen again. Since january 2019, car has been to dealer 3 times for car not starting on 1st try. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11208871, filed 2019-05, 110,100 miles

“Every time it rains, the inside of my vehicle floods through the ceiling and floors. This is a manufacture defect that is outside of my control. This is a safety issue because it causes mold and mildew in the vehicle which is a hazard to inhale. I'm also concerned that the possibility exist for an electrical hazard.”

    NHTSA complaint #11527117, filed 2023-06
  4. Electrical system

Key can turn off while driving (ignition recall)

    • 6 complaints (9%)
    • median 60,000 mi at 4.2 yrs old (2 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2014–2015

Complaints describe the engine shutting off when the ignition key is bumped or moved out of the run position, leaving steering and brakes without power assist; one owner links this to a knee contacting the key fob. Others report receiving recall notices while dealers told them the parts were not yet available, and some objected that the remedy did not replace the switch itself. Mostly reported between about 17,000 and 75,000 miles, often during braking or maneuvering rather than at steady cruise.

    Recall 14V3940001 related service bulletin

What to check: Check whether recall 14V394000 was performed and ask for documentation. Owners can also keep the key ring light, as the recall notice advises, leaving only the ignition key.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“On 6 june, 2013 while driving on m59 in michigan and applying the brakes, my knee made contact with the remote fob, causing the ignition key to move from the on position to accessory mode. The engine stopped running and I had to steer and brake the vehicle without power assist to the shoulder of the road. I put the vehicle in park and restarted without incident. The same situation occurred in january 2014 while driving on I-75 to florida. In both cases I informed my dealer (lafontaine Cadillac in highland, michigan). …”

    NHTSA complaint #10576363, filed 2014-04, 45,000 miles

“Gm is not replacing my key switch. Some how they have convinced you that putting lip stick on a pig is the solution to their problem. It's not and shame on your department for letting them. I want it fix right, my manual does say anywhere not to put anything on my key ring. Do the right thing and make this right! Thank you,”

    NHTSA complaint #10638077, filed 2014-09
  5. Transmission and drivetrain

    Rough or delayed transmission engagement

    • 12 complaints (18%)
    • median 23,383 mi at 4.3 yrs old (8 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2010–2024

Complaints describe the car revving high or lurching forward while braking or pulling into a parking space, delayed acceleration followed by sudden pickup, and a transmission that acts as if it is in neutral at a stop. Owners report repeated dealer visits with no fault found, and in some cases fluid, filter or internal clutch work was mentioned as the suspected source of the behavior. Mostly reported between about 1,800 and 90,000 miles, often at low speed or when moving off from a stop.

    3 related service bulletins

What to check: Drive the car at low speed and from a stop, watching for hesitation, a clunk or a lurch. Ask whether transmission fluid and filter services are documented.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I have read many forums with this exact problem. My car will get out of gear when I'm at a stop. It will act as if it was in neutral. There are no codes that tell you what is wrong and so many people have found that the issue is that the automatic transmission clutch goes bad. I only have 88k miles on my car and so many people seam to have the exact se problem as I am.”

    NHTSA complaint #11343749, filed 2020-08, 88,123 miles

“Since purchasing this certified pre-owned vehicle, I have noticed that the car's engine has an intermittent tendency to suddenly rev or idle very high while my foot is on the brake and I am in the process of slowing down, stopping, or pulling into a parking apace. The car lurches forward and is only controlled during those times by applying a great deal of pressure on the brake until the idle returns to normal and the car stops trying to lurch forward. I have taken the car back to the service dept. …”

Buying note. Ask for recall paperwork and any airbag or engine diagnostic history before purchase, since several of the most common complaints involve warning lights and fault codes that do not always leave a visible symptom. A thorough test drive at low and highway speed plus a scan-tool check covers much of what owners describe here.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? NHTSA recorded 67 consumer complaints for the 2010 Cadillac CTS. 41 of the complaints include a mileage, and 44% of those were filed for vehicles with under 50,000 miles; the median is 56,000 miles. Of all complaints, 2 involved a crash, 1 a fire, 5 an injury, according to the filers. NHTSA lists 3 recall campaigns and 1,446 technical service bulletins for this model year. Compared with the other 9 Cadillac CTS model years that have at least 25 complaints and are old enough to compare, this one scores 39 out of 100, where 50 is a typical year for the model (typical for this model). The comparison allows for the era and for how long each year has had to collect complaints, but not for how many vehicles were sold.

Example complaints

Air bags: “While driving down the highway/freeway both driver and passenger side curtain air bags spontaneously deployed. I do not know as to why the air bags spontaneously deployed but I have seen other instances were this has occurred online.”

NHTSA complaint #10895549, filed 2016-08, 55,000 miles

Electrical system: “I was traveling approximately 65 MPH at around 7pm when a dump truck suddenly moved into my lane. I had to immediately slam on the brakes. Simultaneously, I sounded my horn and flicked my high beams multiple times at which point all of my outside lights went off. I was completely in the dark, traveling in excess of 55 MPH, with no street lights and no car lights. I slowed as quickly as I could and pulled over to the side of the road. I turned the car off and then restarted. Once the car restarted, the lights came back on and functioned normally. …”

NHTSA complaint #10659341, filed 2014-11, 100,000 miles

Engine: “Cadillac sent me a letter dated june 2014 with my vehicle's VIN on it indicating that the supercharger may develop a noticeable rattle noise at idle. The noise will typically go away when the engine RPM is raised slightly above idle. However, if left uncorrected, the problem, over time, may lead to contamination of the lubricating grease and cause the bearing to squeal. If left unaddressed, the bearing may overheat and can cause the engine seizure or no-start condition. Cadillac then goes on to say that they will extend the warranty for this issue for 10 years from the service date. …”

NHTSA complaint #11055670, filed 2017-12, 15,026 miles

Transmission and drivetrain: “2010 Cadillac cts4 premium 3.6 wagon I replaced the rear prop shaft of the awd system in january 2018. I now am having issues with the rear prop shaft yet again, not 2 years later. I believe the driveshaft carrier bearing is failing again (same as before)! With approximately 49k miles on it. I cannot believe that I have to replace this same item again. After having to replace the rear differential twice on this vehicle, I now believe GM has no clue to make a reliable awd vehicle. Worst car ever.”
