“I was using ACC on the freeway when the car in front of me abruptly stopped. I felt the car decelerate, but it didn’t feel like the car was slowing enough. By the time I manually pressed the brakes my car skidded and hit the stopped car in front of me. There was a flashing light that happened right before I hit the car warning me to brake. I’m worried that my car’s friction brakes were not activated by ACC. I will be taking it to an autobody shop soon for repair.”

“Vehicle suddenly brakes aggressively for no reason ! Blue sky no weather events no obstructions ! It also happens I reverse!!! At 60 mph I 4 lanes it’s not fun!!!!!!”

“I was turning at a green light while following behind a truck pulling a trailer. All of the sudden, the car did the automatic emergency braking. It slammed on the brakes in the middle of an intersection while I was going ~15mph, and gave me whiplash. I am not sure if the car got confused by the trailer in front of me, but this is the first time this has happened in my first few weeks of owning this car. I've read that many others have had this issue with the Chevrolet Equinox EV, and this poses a serious safety issue for drivers of this car and others on the road.”

NHTSA complaint #11751995, filed 2026-07

“I manage a fleet of 12 of these vehicles for a Veterans Affairs hospital. I have had numerous complaints from the drivers about how distracting and invasive these systems are for the drivers. The red dash lights are blinding, the audible alert scares someone who is not used to these things and are very distracting in a tense moment when you need to be reacting, you cannot because you are too distracted by these systems. I myself am a disabled veteran with PTSD, and this system sends triggers my PTDS to where I cannot operate the vehicle. …”

“The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle experienced phantom braking and abruptly stopped on three occasions. The contact stated that the failure had occurred while driving approximately 60-70 MPH on the highway, while driving and approaching a stoplight approximately 300 ft. away. The failure also occurred while driving from a complete stop. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and attempted to diagnose the vehicle through the OnStar App, but no diagnostic trouble codes were found. …”
