“Dt: the contact stated the tread separated from the left rear tire. This happened on a rental car that the contact's husband was driving. The tire dealer could not determine the cause of the failure. Updated- the consumer struggled to maintain control of the vehicle, however he did managed to bring the vehicle to a safe stop.”

“Sidewalls of tires split after only 38,000 miles on tires and are original tires for my 2001 chevy Express van . Tire style is a steeltex radial r45 ( lt 245/75r16)”

NHTSA complaint #10137004, filed 2005-09, 38,000 miles

“I run a rental car co. In the past 6 months I have had 5 of the firestone s4s steeltex radial 16 inch tires, that the tread had rolled off the 15 pass van, someone is going to get hurt bad .. I went to the local firestone store and all they want to do is make an adjustment on the tires that failed, but I have this tire on all 7 of my vans and I am afraid to rent them out... I need some help from firestone to replace all of these tires...help me before someone gets hurt.”

NHTSA complaint #10023894, filed 2003-06

“The valve stems on three of my tires were malfunctioning due to improper design of the stems. The problem only occurs at highway speeds. At 70 MPH I was loosing as much as 15 PSI of air in only 10 miles. The air was leaking around the outside of the valve stems because of their improper design. This problem is very dangerous because there is no indication that it is occuring until the tire(s) goes flat, which, if it occurs at highway speed, could easily result in an accident. I was lucky and saw that my tires were almost flat when I stopped for gas. …”

NHTSA complaint #732464, filed 2000-09

“Two separate incidents of tire failure. Firestone replacing tires at no cost for defect. On first incident had complete tread separation. On second incident customer stopped vehicle and changed tire. Tire was deformed on tread surface as if delamination or separation were about to occur. Tire was still on rim when customer turned vehicle in. It was still holding 70 lbs. Of air (max pressure recommended on rear tire 80 lbs. (tiresize: lt245 75 r)”
