“Driving at 55 MPH on hwy 528 about 20 miles east of orlando, the truck began to shake and then we suffered a catastrophic tread separation of our rear driver's side tire. We were trailering a camper at the time. By the time I was able to bring the truck to a stop on the shoulder of the highway we had sustained close to $3000 worth of damage to the rear driver's side fender and wheel well. This was the 2nd kumho lt 245/75 r16 of the set that had a separation. The first one we were able to slow done in time to prevent any damage to the vehicle. …”

NHTSA complaint #10824010, filed 2016-02, 198,000 miles

“I own a 2002 chevy SILVERADO 2500 on which I have four michelin ltx m/s 245/75-16 tires. After 18 months and 10,000 miles the sidewalls began to crack. I have michelin tires on all four of my vehicles and have never had one crack even on 6 year old tires. I called michelin, but they say that is normal weathering. Now they are cracking to the point that the tread could easily separate. My tire dealer is going to replace them, but michelin will not reimburse them as michelin denies there is a problem. …”

NHTSA complaint #10451109, filed 2012-03, 103,340 miles

“My tire tread came completely off as I was going 70mph on florida turnpike yesterday, almost causing an accident, and ripped my whole plastic dust protector, (not sure of proper name) off. Tires are firestone steelex at lt 245/75/r16 which had 40,000miles, but showed very little wear. Aaa came and got me on the road again, but was really a frightening experience. Any other complaints on these tires? These were the original tires on my chevy silverado which I bought new, and have maintained faithfully.”

NHTSA complaint #10222724, filed 2008-03, 40,600 miles

“Experienced tire separation at 70mph of a firestone steeltex radial a/t lt245/75r16 load range e m/s. Tire separation damaged the right rear quarter panel and forward rear quarter panel. Took the truck to a tire store to have the other tires inspected. The remaining tires where all found to be separating.”

NHTSA complaint #10596462, filed 2014-06, 32,777 miles

“Steel belted radial tire firestone steel tx radial a/t lt245/75r16 separated at highway speed of 65 MPH. Driver maintained control of vehicle but truck wheel well and bumper and body of truck are damaged. Driver recovered steel belt fragments from freeway and tire is available.
