“I have a 2010 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck and after returning from lunch noticed the spare tire hanging loosely on the underside of the truck bed. After trying to use the jack handle to tighten it back up which failed I lowered the tire via the jack handle and proceeded to view the hoist. The hoist is held up by a single bolt to the undercarriage. I removed the bolt and found that the metal surrounding the bolt had several stress cracks and 2 new fractures. I removed the unit and have it currently. …”

NHTSA complaint #10547090, filed 2013-10, 116,000 miles

“Spare tire hoist bracket broke and spare tire was swinging loosely under rear of truck. Further investigation revealed several stress cracks in bracket surrounding the bolt hole. If tire bracket would have broke off tire would drop to pavement and become a road hazard. Sources at dealer indicated they had no bulletins on this item but knew of some people who had lost their spare tires. I still have the parts.”
