Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“At 36,900 miles I had the rear and front pinion berrings replaced on my drive train. I also replaced the tires which were worn out. The vehicle is not driven much (4.5 years old) as indicated by the mileage. I also experienced my accelorator being stiff when I attempt to depress it. I think GM needs to look into their shoddy transmission components. I also had the rear seal replaced at approximately 10,000 miles.”

NHTSA complaint #10067759, filed 2004-04, 36,900 miles

“The cable holding up my spare tire on my 2000 z-71 Silverado pickup broke, dropping the spare tire onto the road. Fortunately I was on a road early in the morning just pulling through a intersection and wasn't pulling my horse trailer.”

NHTSA complaint #10056470, filed 2004-02, 59,100 miles

“The spare tire hoist cable broke, and the spare tire dropped onto the highway. It bounced at least 10 feet in the air, narrowly missing cars driving the opposite direction. Luckily it rolled to the shoulder without hitting anything. I had never used the spare, nor lowered the hoist mechanism. This tire weighs ~75 pounds and could have easily killed a passing motorist.”

NHTSA complaint #10608606, filed 2014-07, 210,000 miles

“1) highway driving for 4 hours, 60 MPH, normal loading of vehicle, 2 adults, 2 children 2) complete tread separation of tire, fortunately tire remained inflated, no accident, damage to rear wheel well, firestone wilderness at, size p265/75r 16 114s m/s, tire was original from Chevrolet, truck had 53,400 miles 3) replaced all tires to goodyear.”

NHTSA complaint #10130560, filed 2005-07, 53,400 miles

“While driving at approximately 25 MPH cable that holds the spare tire in position at the base of the vehicle snapped inadvertently. The tire fell from under the vehicle into traffic. ...a car behind consumer's vehicle was alert to see the tire coming, stopped and avoided hitting tire.”

NHTSA complaint #10117242, filed 2005-04, 43,000 miles
