“Last saturday 2-20-99 , the cruse control on my 93 Suburban stuck at 70 MPH. The brake pedal went hard. It took all my strength, both feet on the brake petal, pulling back on the steering wheel, to slow the vehical down to about 15 MPH. I then put it in neutral. The rpms pegged out, but I was able to stop the car in acouple of seconds and turn off the key. If anyone else in my family would of been driving they would of crashed. Please send me some information about speed controls and what I can do to eliminate this problem in the future. Thank you m. Bryon walston”
NHTSA complaint #703624, filed 1999-02“Consumer's son was traveling about 30mph. While approaching a traffic light applied brakes, and brake pedal went to the floor. Vehicle accelerated into another vehicle. There were no injuries. Consumer took vehicle to dealership, and mechanic told him that problem couldn't be duplicated. Abs brake system wasn't operable.”
NHTSA complaint #868216, filed 2000-08“While driving at 70 MPH with the cruise control on, cruise control got stuck, and the brake pedal went hard. Driver had to put both feet on brake pedal with full body weight to slow down, and had to shift into neutral to stop the vehicle. Cruise modulator had to be manually unstuck. Gm denies that this is a manufacturing defect.”
NHTSA complaint #835589, filed 1999-03“While driving with 8 passengers, put cruise control on at 65 MPH and it stayed on and nothing would slow vehicle down. Managed to slow vehicle down by standing on brakes, putting gear in neutral, and turning engine off. Dealer contacted and repairwork done at owner's expense. Provide further information.”
NHTSA complaint #836177, filed 1999-03“Abs brake problems; intermittently; while driving on regular road conditions, during normal braking when applying the brakes, the pedal almost reaches the floorbroad and system will kick in and stop. The vehicle surges forward before it stops. The front brakes pads have been replaced (4) times in 70,000 miles. Both calipers have been replaced, and the rotors on the right side. Consumer is still experiencing a braking problem.”
