“Had to replace second faulty impact sensor for air bag on my vehicle. This is located in front of vehicle. The first replacement of the other sensor was july 26, 2013. This vehicle was never in a crash and had not damage to the front of the vehicle. When the air bag comes on they tell me my air bags no longer work. My family has a 2000 Chevrolet tahoe that has never had this problem. I am sure there is a lot of people who would not have this item fixed.”

“The airbag system has stopped working 6 times since I bought my brand new Suburban. The service air bag light comes on which means the system will not work if in an accident. The have attempted to fix it six times. Now GM stated that they will not do anything further and their solution is for me to buy a new car when my car is only 2.5 years old and only has 36,000 miles on it.”

NHTSA complaint #10232541, filed 2008-06, 10,900 miles

“One morning came out to start my 2005 Suburban and the service airbag message popped on along with the airbag light. Took it to my service center and was told it was a front impact sensor. Was also told this is a common problem on these vehicles. After doing some research online I have found this to be a very common problem rendering the airbag system inop. I believe GM needs to step up and fix the issue with the sensors as not everyone has $400 to fix a faulty sensor. The odometer on my Suburban is 127,000 miles, so by no means driven hard.”

NHTSA complaint #10937319, filed 2016-12, 127,000 miles

“The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that the air bag warning lamp illuminated. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic and the air bag sensor was replaced however, the failure later recurred. The vehicle was not further repaired and manufacturer was not made award of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 75000.”

NHTSA complaint #10552083, filed 2013-11, 75,000 miles

“The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 MPH, she crashed into the rear of a trash truck. Upon impact, the air bags did not deploy. The driver sustained injuries to the left arm and left leg. The police were contacted and a report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where they deemed the vehicle as being destroyed. The manufacturer was contacted and after diagnosing the vehicle, they advised her that the vehicle was not traveling fast enough at the time of impact for the airbags to deploy. …”
