Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“Air bag light came on in instrument panel indicating failure. The wiring harness on the tilt wheel broke (fatugued). Dealer said that I used the tilt mechanism too much and that it was not intended to be used each entry/exit. I commented that this assembly should have been designed to prevent this type of failure since the air bag operation was impaired by it. Dealer disagreed, refused to contact Chevrolet in my behalf and charged me over $240.00 to replace the part. This is a very critical assembly and never should have failed from use in this manner. …”

NHTSA complaint #716872, filed 2000-01

“During normal operation air bag light will illuminate and stay on. Dealership has examined vehicle and determined air bag control unit in steering column was causing the problem. Cost to consumer would be $600.00 for repairs. Please provide any additional information / documentation.”

NHTSA complaint #8003039, filed 2002-01

“While driving at approximately 45mph with cruise control engaged but not set, experienced sudden acceleration, engine overpowered brakes, to avoid collision steered into ditch, vehicle flipped over end, then rolled twice side ways, no airbag deployment, no prior warning, after accident, shoulder/lap belt remained latched, but pulled all the way out, allowing to impact with interior.”

NHTSA complaint #811458, filed 1997-04

“We took a nose dive into a deep ditch at about 40 MPH. The driver's side air bag did not deploy. The driver suffered severe facial damage where plastic surgury was necessary. The front end of the car sustained severe damage.”

NHTSA complaint #737206, filed 2000-12

“Driving vehicle at 30 MPH, fell asleep at wheel, lost control, hit stop pole dead center, driver's air bag did not deploy; broke & dislocated shoulder; wore seat belts.”
