Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“There's an odd situation when I'm in the electric mode and am passing over a bumpy bit of road: the vehicle accelerates automatically. The part that is troubling is that these are times when the driver would want to slow down. It has happened to me many times. I've been lucky, so far. But I hope this is remedied soon.”

NHTSA complaint #10906933, filed 2016-09, 8 miles

“Un-commanded vehicle acceleration under full electric drive mode (twice). While driving steady around 65 MPH on the freeway (no cruise control used), a slight step on the accelerator, caused the car immediately accelerated up to 88 MPH (dash show large electrical draw of battery power). Stepping on the brake, using the regen paddle on the steering wheel and repeated pressing the cruise control power didn't disengage the power surge. Car would accelerate when brake pressure was lifted. …”

NHTSA complaint #11299056, filed 2020-01, 40,000 miles

“My car will lose all power as I'm driving, switch between gas/ elec and almost stall, it will accelerate when I take my foot OFF the gas , it will lose power on a turn.. it's random. form what I understand it's the BECM and it happened just after 100k miles. I have 105k.”

NHTSA complaint #11563877, filed 2024-01

“I bought the car new in 2015 and after about only 40,000 miles I began getting a Propulsion Reduced error and the car would have very slow acceleration. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the accelerator for $500. It drove fine for a month, but then the acceleration was reduced again. I took it back to the dealer and they were stumped. They wanted to charge me $1300 just to replace some wires, but they weren't confident that would fix the problem. I declined. …”

NHTSA complaint #11589877, filed 2024-05

“This vehicle has had multiple incidents of surging of the propulsion system both on battery power and when powered by the internal combustion engine, causing loss of propulsion and sudden acceleration almost causing collisions multiple times. We have paid for over $4,000 in repairs that are not covered under the propulsion system warranty, and these repairs have not remedied the issue.”
