What owners report
Owners of this model year most often report the air bag warning light staying on, headlights that flicker or go dark while driving, and power steering trouble including leaks, whining and a wheel that becomes hard to turn or briefly locks. Many of these reports come in at moderate mileage (roughly 20,000 to 70,000 miles), though steering, suspension and lighting complaints also appear well past 100,000 miles.
- Air bags
Air bag warning light stays on (clock spring)
- 43 complaints (17%)
- median 56,000 mi at 4.6 yrs old (22 state mileage)
- 4 mention a crash, fire or injury
- filed 2001–2015
Owners describe the air bag or SRS warning light coming on and staying lit, sometimes intermittently while driving. Several say a dealer diagnosed a failed clock spring and replaced it, in some cases more than once, while others were told the vehicle was fine to drive or that the connector had corrosion that was cleaned. Multiple complaints note that earlier model years had a clock spring recall and ask whether this year is covered. Mostly reported between about 19,000 and 93,000 miles, with a few at higher mileage.
What to check: Turn the key to on and confirm the air bag light goes out after the bulb check; if it stays lit, ask for the stored air bag codes and whether the clock spring has been replaced.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“The air bag light keeps coming on and then goes out. I believes it the same problem covered for previous year models included in the clock spring NHTSA recall 04v480000. I believe the recall should be extended to all year models since it's the same problem. It happens at various driving speeds.”
NHTSA complaint #10453260, filed 2012-03, 171,080 miles“We own a 2001 Dodge Caravan. The air bag warning light alerted us to a problem. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a failure of the clockspring. A recall was recently issued for clockspring failures on the 1999 and 2000 caravans. The dealer, for a cost of $255.48, replaced the part. Apparently the problem was not resolved on the 2001 models. I believe the potential problem exists and should be addressed.”
NHTSA complaint #10095906, filed 2004-10, 52,000 miles - Exterior lighting
Headlights flicker or cut out while driving
- 36 complaints (14%)
- median 51,000 mi at 5.8 yrs old (22 state mileage)
- 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
- owner-quoted repair $500 (median of 5 quotes)
- filed 2001–2025
Complaints describe headlights that flicker, go dark without warning and sometimes come back on by themselves, often at highway speed. Owners report dealers being unable to reproduce or fix it; one repair involved replacing the front control module, another a fuse box, and another a body control module, with some saying the problem returned afterward. A related pattern in the same reports is dashboard gauges, wipers or horn misbehaving at the same time. Reported from very low mileage up to about 170,000 miles, with many under 70,000.
What to check: Test all exterior lights, wipers and dash gauges with the engine running, and ask whether the front control module or fuse box has been replaced.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“Headlights on my 2001 Dodge Caravan van will turn off while driving the vehicle. There is nothing that proceeds this action and it causes great concern due to limited and/or complete loss of light to safely drive the vehicle. The headlights will suddenly come back on with no action on my part. The time it takes for the headlights to come back on varies. This defect needs immediate attention!”
NHTSA complaint #10118313, filed 2005-04, 41,045 miles“Since late spring 2008, the headlights on my 2001 Dodge Caravan have intermittently flickered and gone out, then come back on. This continued off and on until I had the vehicle repaired at a vehicle electrical system expert (enormis, erie pa) in july of 2009. They replaced the fuse box for the vehicle at a cost of approx $430. They indicated that they have had to do this with approx. Six other vehicles recently. …”
NHTSA complaint #10278254, filed 2009-07, 13,400 miles - Steering
Power steering leaks, whine and hard or locking steering
- 23 complaints (9%)
- median 35,000 mi at 3.5 yrs old (16 state mileage)
- 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
- filed 2001–2017
Owners report power steering fluid loss from split cooler or return hoses, a whine or groan when turning, and steering that becomes stiff or briefly locks, in some cases requiring heavy effort and leaving the wheel hard to turn. Dealers replaced rack and pinion units, steering gears and pumps, and some complaints note parts being on backorder. One owner reported that the steering wheel locked repeatedly in cold weather. Mostly reported between about 20,000 and 70,000 miles, with some at higher mileage; cold weather is mentioned in a few.
What to check: Check the power steering fluid level and look for wet or cracked hoses, listen for whine when turning at idle, and ask whether the rack, pump or hoses have been replaced.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“Steering wheel locks especially during extreme cold weather. Mostly turning to left. This is an every day event for me. The dealer said that he can first try resovoir and flush which is $350, but he can't guarantee this will help. If it doesn't help then he will try a new pump which is $800 and something else which is $400. Ultimately, I will be spending up to $1550 for repairs that may or may not work.”
NHTSA complaint #10107764, filed 2005-01, 76,000 miles“While driving at any speed, the vehicle vibrated uncontrollably. The driver lost control of the vehicle, but regained control. The mechanic informed the driver that the steering gear needed to be replaced. Please provide further details. Steering wheel would lock and not turn while driving. Consumer had the steering gear replaced at her own expense.”
NHTSA complaint #10092346, filed 2004-10, 5,820 miles - Suspension
Front suspension rattles, clunks and worn sway bar links
- 23 complaints (9%)
- median 45,000 mi at 4.2 yrs old (11 state mileage)
- filed 2001–2013
Complaints describe a rattle, clunk or creak from the front end over bumps, with some owners reporting sway bar links or front end parts replaced repeatedly. Others describe vibration felt through the floor, and a few report a strut pushing up through the body, with rust blamed for the housing failure. Dealers sometimes told owners the noise or vibration was normal for the vehicle. Spread from about 40,000 to over 140,000 miles, reported over bumps and rough roads.
Recall 01V1520002 related service bulletins
What to check: Drive over speed bumps and listen for front-end rattle or clunk, look for rust around the strut towers, and ask about the lower control arm pivot bolts and any suspension work already done.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“We got into our 2001 Dodge Caravan and started to drive it and noticed that there was a rattling noise in the front passenger side of the suspension. I pulled the van over and noticed the passenger side strut was up through into the engine compartment! I believe the housing is rusted through, which allowed the strut to poke all the way out.”
NHTSA complaint #10522777, filed 2013-07, 143,000 miles“When going over bumps in the road there would be a loud rattling noise coming from the front end. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. This has been a on going problem which the mfg., takes no responsibility for. They should have replaced the front end at their expense originally, while it was under warranty. Had to have it replaced twice and still not fixed. Install special order steering rack.”
NHTSA complaint #10111756, filed 2005-04, 70,000 miles - Air bags
Sliding door and latch problems
- 15 complaints (6%)
- median 28,500 mi at 4.2 yrs old (10 state mileage)
- 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
- filed 2001–2012
Owners report power sliding doors and the rear liftgate that will not open with the remote, a sliding door that fails to latch while driving, and a seat belt or door mechanism jamming so the door cannot be opened from inside or out. Some say the vehicle did not qualify for a related latch or door recall campaign when they checked. Reported from about 10,000 to 123,000 miles.
What to check: Cycle both sliding doors and the liftgate several times with the remote and the interior handles, and check that each door latches firmly and opens from inside and outside.
2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records
“Dt: received recall 04v531000 at the beginning of the year, and could not get the recall work done on 2001 Dodge Caravan. Took it to a dealer to have it repaired, and they said they could not do it because they did not have the part. The consumer called chrysler and they had no service in spanish. The door actuator was replaced.”
NHTSA complaint #10129577, filed 2005-08, 67,000 miles“The rear passenger seat belt became stuck in the power sliding door causing the door to jam. The door could not be opened from the inside or outside. The vehicle is currently with the dealer being repaired. Please provide any further details.”
NHTSA complaint #10048684, filed 2003-11, 20,000 miles
Buying note. On a vehicle of this age, the practical checks are the air bag warning light, all exterior lighting, power steering condition and the front end over bumps. Ask for service records covering steering, suspension and lighting repairs, and confirm whether any open recall work has actually been completed.
Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? The steering was not affected .this caused the horn and cruise control to malfunction. The air bag light came on intermittently. Contact called Dodge and told them.he had this problem for the past week.”
NHTSA complaint #10129479, filed 2005-07, 87,000 milesSteering: “I have a 2001 Dodge Caravan. First noticed (a few months ago) the cruise control did not work; then the horn would work intermittently. Now, the horn does not work at all. Had the dealer troubleshoot and they said the clockspring is faulty and needs to be replaced. I noticed that there had been a recall to replace clocksprings in caravans up to year 2000. I ordered my Caravan in november, 2000 and received it january, 2001.”
NHTSA complaint #10221603, filed 2008-03, 67,000 milesSuspension: “Driving in normal winter conditions, less than 2 inches of snow, not less than 20 degrees in weather, my antilock brakes froze up, causing me to spin out. Luckily I did not hit anything or crash. $800 worth of damage, brake lining froze to drum. Had to replace brake pads, drums, wheel bearings in both rear wheels.”
