Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“In the 3rd row of seats in my 2001 Dodge minivan, a passenger left the seatback in a semi-reclined position. I leaned in to release the seatback to full upright. When I engaged the release, the seatback snapped forward with great speed and force all the way down until it rested on the seat. In its path downward, it failed to stop in the upright position. The top of the seat struck full in my face, breaking my glasses, causing a bruise and abrasion to my nose. In subsequent tests, the seatback always failed to stop in the upright position.”

NHTSA complaint #10043168, filed 2003-10, 15,568 miles

“Seat back on the captains chair located on rear driver's side did not lock in place, resulting in child being injured. Child sustained a blackened eye from hitting the driver's seat. Consumer stated that rear seat didn't latched properly causing the seat to pivot forward. Brought seat to the dealer and found that the mechanism that locks chair was frozen.”

NHTSA complaint #10051942, filed 2004-03, 41,000 miles

“The driver seat reclined while driving 30-35 MPH. The consumer was able to lift up without being involved in a vehicle crash. The consumer noticed that the seat was broken at the weld. The vehicle has not been inspected at this time.”

NHTSA complaint #10113527, filed 2005-03, 56,000 miles

“Seat frame on driver's seat broke. Dealr states that it is not under warranty. It would be $1,200 to replace. I feel that the metal frame should not have broken since this car has not been involved in any accidents and there is no reason the frame should have broken.”

NHTSA complaint #10090924, filed 2004-09

“Rear seat anchors(isofix) stick upward from seat back. Anchors interferes with child seat. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealer bent anchors downward. Please provide further information.”
