“2001 Dodge Intrepid. The motor started to knock at start up for a couple of seconds then after about two weeks the engine dies two blocks from home. Got home and it started with a very loud squealing coming from the bottom of the motor. It has 137,000 miles and I am pretty sure it is a crank bearing. I use synthetic and change the oil every 3,000 miles.”

NHTSA complaint #10235404, filed 2008-07, 137,000 miles

“I was driving down the street when the engine stopped working. My brakes went out on me and I ended up in the middle of someone's yard, much better then the back end of the car in front of me, but still very scary. I was able to restart the car and get onto the side street before it died for the last time.”

NHTSA complaint #10273998, filed 2009-06, 78,000 miles

“I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid I got the oil changed one day the next it is not drivable due to the timing chain going out Dodge does not care about their vehicles I have talked to them I also found out that there are 5 Intrepid's in a town of 6500 people with the same problem. And it takes a lot for repair cause of the bad engine design.”

NHTSA complaint #10184830, filed 2007-03, 114,000 miles

“Car started making a knocking sound, and died on me. I was told that I needed oil and to have it checked out. On the way to shop car died in an intersection , my husband had to push it across traffic. Had the car towed to sho, p and was told that the engine had blown due to sludge and that this was common with the Dodge Intrepid.”

NHTSA complaint #10191572, filed 2007-05, 92,000 miles

“One day it started the terrible knocking took it immediately to a mechanic and he gave me the bad news about these engines .the 2.7 liter engine on my 2001 Dodge Intrepid failed at 120,000 miles. I have regularly maintained this vehicle, and the costs of the repairs are phenomenal ($ 4000 )--and I am still stuck with the same 2.7 liter engine.”
