“Original owner of 2005 Dodge Magnum r/t 5.7l. This is the third time since purchase of the car that I have had to replace lug nuts on all 4 tires. This is the 2nd complaint filed. I filed a previous complaint in 2014. Lug nuts should not be designed with fancy chrome that spins round and round and requires special socket to remove in an emergency situation. Not sure how many other car owners have experienced my situation with lug nuts but the design and cost for replacement is criminal and requires an investigation.”
NHTSA complaint #11291860, filed 2019-12, 111,000 miles“On march 19, 2014, while cleaning my 2005 Dodge Magnum, I noticed a small air leak on the left rear tire. After further investigation, I discovered a nail in the sidewall of the tire. I drove the car down the road to the tire center to have the tire replaced. The replacement for the tire was covered by the roadside hazard coverage. I figured I would kill two birds with one stone and also have the tires rotated and the alignment checked. …”
NHTSA complaint #10574110, filed 2014-03, 77,052 miles“I have a 2005 Magnum and a 2006 charger that have both had issues with the lug nut casings coming apart when attempting to remove tires for rotation or brake work. I used the standard equipment that came with the vehicle and eventually had to go to the dealer to purchase new lugs that were about $4 a piece.”
NHTSA complaint #10290475, filed 2009-10, 37,000 miles“While rotating the tires I quickly noticed the lug nuts seemed to be installed very tight. They were, in fact, installed above the specified 100 lb. Ft. They were on so tight that the permanent chrome caps striped off 2 separate nuts! I then used a smaller size socket to remove these lug nuts. On another wheel I could not, by no means available, remove 2 of 6 lug nuts. The tools I used were; a conventional socket wrench with the specified 21mm socket, air wrench w/220lb of torque, and even the wrench that is included with the jack and spare. …”
NHTSA complaint #10189622, filed 2007-05“The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Magnum. The contact stated that the front passenger side aluminum wheel became cracked across the valve stem. The contact applied epoxy to the crack however it continued to slowly become bigger. The owner of the local dealer was notified but offered no assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 79,000 the current mileage was 80,200.”
