“The engine surges periodically, sometimes when going down the road. I believe if the throttle jams wide open injury could occur and vehicle would be uncontrollable. Diagnosed as a faulty throttle position sensor. Contacted the dealer, not under warranty, cost to replace, $550.00. Contacted chrysler, nothing can be done, except my paying for replacement.”
NHTSA complaint #10141661, filed 2005-11, 59,983 miles“I have a 1999 cummins with the #53 block. The block is cracked and according to this my research, this is a common problem. I have always owned Dodge vehicles but with all the hassle and money I have gone through trying to fix this, it is really making me reconsider buying a Dodge product ever again. This is not a wear and tear issue this is a defect and cummins needs to address it properly. Buyer beware!”
NHTSA complaint #10214777, filed 2008-01, 100,000 miles“I had a leaky heater core that needed to be replaced which required me to remove the dashboard. I noticed some hairline fractures in the dash before I removed it, however it looked very much in tact so I didn't think much of it. After removing the dash from its mounted position however it began breaking apart and throwing shards of sharp broken plastic to the floorboard and seats. It virtually began to disintegrate before my very eyes and I could not help but imagine what it would be like to be in an accident and have all of those plastic shards being propelled into my body and face. …”
NHTSA complaint #10525513, filed 2013-07, 168,000 miles“From the first 6000 miles-3 intake manifold gaskets, new tires, blow out & damaged truck, brakes ,calipers and rotors bad, transmission not right, steering not right two rear axle seals blown, new engine at 63,000. It is now blown (we believe, the computer system & torque converter should have been replaced for the start). We have all our paperwork dealership does not!!!!!!!! Warranty company does. We maintained this truck extremely well!!!!! We bought a total piece of junk.”
NHTSA complaint #10168547, filed 2006-09, 63,000 miles“I have a 1999 Dodge 2500 with a 24 valve cummins motor. I started to notice coolant loss and found a crack on the passenger side of the block behind the heat exchanger. I have since found this to be a very common problem with 99 - 01 with a 53 casting . I went to dealer, only to find I was just out of warranty. I wrote to daimler/chrysler and to quote we are starting to see several of these appear and have approached cummins about this problem, but at this point they are dragging their feet on restitution or resolution. …”
