“I bought the car and drove it less than 20,000 mile then the timing belt broke causing the exhaust valves to bend and mess the head up causing me to replace the engine ant almost $2000.00. I hear that this is an ongoing problem with these cars I read where people are sueing for repair.”
NHTSA complaint #10056831, filed 2004-02, 110,000 miles“My car engine was blown at 48,600 miles due to a valve coming apart and a piston going through the engine. The most ironic part of this is that it happened 7 days after the expiration of my 7 year 70,000 mile extended warranty that I purchased when I bought the car. As you can see the milage was significantly under the mileage threshold by more than 30%. I have contacted chysler and my dealer. Chrysler came back with an offer of $6,000 to repair my engine of which they would pay half. Sounds like a great deal, huh? Not really when the book value on the car is $3,000. …”
NHTSA complaint #729481, filed 2000-08“Driving about 25 MPH and without prior warning the vehicle had loud noise coming from the engine, and the vehicle stalled. The consumer stated the engine has been replaced three times, and the dealer indicated vehicle needed another engine , and they can't determine any other problems.”
NHTSA complaint #831342, filed 1998-11“Timing belt broke while starting the vehicle. Heard that there might be a recall on this item.. Would like to find out. Also paint is flaking and peeling very badly on the rear bumper section. And paint is bubbling above the drivers side door near the sunroof.”
NHTSA complaint #705982, filed 1999-04“Manufacturer specs require timing belt replacement every 60,000 miles but new replacement timing belt failed less than 20,000 miles later, causing severe engine damage and car to cut out while traveling on highway.on highway.”
