“The rear tires on my pick up truck failed - the tread separated - while I was operating on a route 81 in va. The tires failed within 100 miles of each other and they both failed the same way. I was towing a trailer, but all loads were well below the maximum capacity ratings. The first tire also ruptured/deflated. The other tire did not deflate - only lost the tread. The tread wound around the axle damaging the parking brake cable. Both wheel wells and rear fenders were damaged.”

NHTSA complaint #10424172, filed 2011-09, 82,000 miles

“I was northbound on interstate i95 in florida traveling at 60 MPH in the right lane pulling a 32 ft 5th wheel trailer at approx 09:00 when the right rear tire tread on my pickup came off and caused approximately $7000.00 in damage to the truck, I was able to control the truck and trailer without further damage. The tire had less then 10000 miles on it and was a firestone lt265/75r16 steeltex at.”

NHTSA complaint #10132071, filed 2005-08, 10,000 miles

“Left front firestone tire blow-out- driving my 1999 Ford f250 and pulling a 21 foot family runabout style boat north of fresno on highway 41 to bass lake. As I entered the highway at fresno, I felt a slight vibration in the truck which felt like a slightly out of balance tire. I had not had a bounce before and thought I needed to have the tires balanced on return from bass lake. 10 miles north, the left front tire exploded / tread separation -(firestone steeltex a/t - lt 265/75r16, load range e). …”

NHTSA complaint #10276436, filed 2009-07, 54,000 miles

“Was traveling around 55 MPH and the passenger's rear tire separated. When the the tire separated, part of the rubber came up and caused damage to the right passegers side bed. I put my spare tire on it to get home. The bed has not been repaired or tire(s) replaced. Have pictures to document the damage. The tire company we bought the tires from advised us to file this complaint. They are wild country, radial rvt, size- m+s 35x12.50r16.5lt 1230.”

NHTSA complaint #10091361, filed 2004-09, 85,265 miles

“I was driving down the at around 45mph when I felt a bump in the back of my truck. I looked back and my spare tire had fallen off the underside of my truck. No other cars were around so I turned around and got the tire off the road and put it in the truck bed. I looked under the truck and the cable that held the tire in place was frayed and broken. If I had been going town a busy freeway this could have caused an accident. 1999 Ford f250 superduty 4x4 built prior to 3/22/99. To repair I will have to purchase new spare tire carrier from Ford.”
