“Information pertains to a 2017 Honda hrv with 89k miles, serviced at Honda dealerships only. While on interstate I-95n on 1/13/21 noticed a grinding noise that seemed to originate from the front driver's side of the car only under acceleration. Several minutes later, engine revs suddenly skyrocketed and the car lost all ability to accelerate. This was a particularly dangerous and harrowing situation as we were travelling at highway speeds (55-65mph). Able to coast the vehicle over 5 lanes to the highway shoulder. …”
NHTSA complaint #11388174, filed 2021-01, 89,000 miles“Last night at 12:58am, I was traveling in my 2017 Honda HR-V on the expressway toll (limit of 75 MPH), going approximately 80-85 MPH on cruise. Suddenly, my vehicle quit accelerating, all the lights on my dash lit up, and pressing the gas did nothing (no jerking or sound). It was extremely frightening because there was no shoulder, a single lane very high up, with no other vehicles in sight behind me to anticipate my stop. Luckily, I came upon a hill to coast down and I pulled over as the shoulder opened up. I had all power, radio, lights, car running like normal. . . …”
NHTSA complaint #11395339, filed 2021-02, 85,000 miles“I was pulling into a parking space. While slowing down and braking to a stop the car suddenly surged forward, jumped a curb and ran into a rock retaining wall. I pressed the brake pedal to the floor, it gave no resistance and did not stop the car. The engine was revving at a high rate, even while it hit the wall. The repairs were over $2000 for damage to the front end, lights, air conditioner and radiator support. The airbags did not deploy. The car was about 8-10 feet from the wall when it accelerated. I had the car repaired. I took it to a Honda dealer and also contacted american Honda. …”
NHTSA complaint #11330339, filed 2020-06, 6,595 miles“I was driving it, it went into a limp mode. I could not accelerate. My dash light up flashing all different warning signs. Then put me at a complete stop and in permanent park with 6 or 7 dash lights on for my breaking system. When I was able to get it serviced they found I had complete transmission failure.”
NHTSA complaint #11594126, filed 2024-06“Dear American Honda Motor Co., Inc. ,I am writing to formally document my experience with a premature failure of the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in my Honda HR-V. The vehicle was covered under the extended warranty program Honda implemented specifically for the known CVT issues affecting 2016–2020 model years. In On 3/10/26 the CVT failed at approximately 96,000 miles.
