“When driving at highway speeds in a straight line the steering sticks. As the car drifts in the lane it takes an extreme amount of pressure to move the steering wheel and then it over corrects. I have two elantras and they both have the same problem. I have been researching and see people have had this complaint since 2011.”

NHTSA complaint #10816548, filed 2015-12, 9,000 miles

“The car was in motion on a street. It kept jumping and would not accelerate, the steering wheel got really hard to move. It makes a clicking noise when I try to turn it on, when I turn on the car white smoke that smells really strong starts coming out of the exhaust and the car won't drive, if I put it on drive it jumps a lot and turns off by itself. I have read an article in which many users of the Hyundai Elantra from the years 2011 to 2015 have this same motor issues. Something is not right with the engine. …”

NHTSA complaint #11324420, filed 2020-05, 83,000 miles

“When we drive the car the steering wheel will stick or seem to catch on something which makes it very hard to drive straight and not all over the rd like were drunk. It doesn't do it if you are turning. Only when you drive straight. It has definitely almost caused some accidents, and also tickets too! I would think that the steering would be considered a safety issue and I most definitely think Hyundai would want to make their care owners their priority since we are driving their name and reputation. …”

NHTSA complaint #11208873, filed 2019-05, 20 miles

“While driving on 5 freeway in california my 2014 Hyundai Elantra started to violently shake like someone hitting the brake. I threw it in neutral and help my wife turn the steering wheel because we lost power steering. We got lucky and had a space to coast to the side of the road. When we got towed to tuttle-click in irvine, ca and our car turned into the service department, they basically said we are on our own to find a ride back home and no loaner car. …”

NHTSA complaint #10759178, filed 2015-08, 16,500 miles

“After less than 2 years, the car battery dies and disables the control of this particular car and year. Many customers, according to reviews, seem to have the same problem. Should the battery falter when driving on a highway, serious accidents could result. My vehicle was moving at a slow pace in the parking lot when the battery died. I lost control of the car. I was not expecting the battery to die as it is only about 18 months old. I do not have a picture. The car is at the dealership.”
