“A bolt on the lower steering shaft sheared off and disconnected the lower steering shaft and damaged the clockspring. It also caused the car to spin out of control in the rain because I lost the ability to control steering. The car finally stopped inches away from a rock wall. The car was un-drivable due to the loss of steering ability. My mechanic had to remove and replace the lower steering shaft and clock spring assembly.”
NHTSA complaint #10649993, filed 2014-10, 126,226 miles“While I drive down the road, weather it be at 10mph or 55mph, my eps light and emergency brake light will turn on and my car will stop. It will not turn off until my car is stopped, turned off. And turned back on again. Since the power steering is lost I can not just turn to the side of the road. I have to pray that no one will be coming up behind me and hit me causing an accident. Before that will happen for two weeks my alarm will go off at all hours of the day and night. …”
NHTSA complaint #10956876, filed 2017-02, 108,215 miles“On december 5th, 2020 at approximatly 0645am I was driving my Elantra without and iissues or pre-indicators that something very bad was about to happen. I was on a busy road that is traveled all times of the day, getting on interstate 270 in columbus headed west. I estimate (picture included from accident site and where the freeway started) about 1000 feet until I merge onto the well traveled highway. Iwhen I I completed my slight turn associated with this paticular on ramp, I lose control of the vehicle without warning, my car went in two circles. …”
NHTSA complaint #11378056, filed 2020-12, 203 miles“Mechanic changing the spark plugs noticed that the steering was questionable on our 2007 Elantra. We brought it back to the dealer since we bought an extended warranty on it and they diagnosed it as a problem with the steering column. They replaced it under our warranty. I hate to think that this may be more extensive based on the other reports and that we were lucky to have our mechanic notice it before it became dangerous.”
NHTSA complaint #10419577, filed 2011-08, 60,000 miles“Eps light came on the dash and I immediately lost all power steering. The vehicles steering became so stiff it was extremely difficult to steer the car. Someone with less strength like a young lady or older person would be in grave danger of crashing, anyone for that matter - I have found out that the systems is totally integrated. There is a module that has failed but can not be replaced on it's own. The entire steering column has to be replaced for about $2500.00. …”
