What owners report

Owners of the 2022 Sonata most often describe sudden loss of power or stalling, and a large share of those complaints are tied to fuel-injector or fuel-tank problems. A second cluster covers jerky or harsh shifting and intermittent no-start conditions, often reported at very low mileage, while a dealer "could not reproduce" response is a recurring theme. Reports range from a few hundred miles to beyond 100,000.

  1. Engine

Sudden loss of power or stalling while driving

Mentioned in 9 of 60 sampled complaints

Owners describe the car losing drive power without warning, sometimes at highway speed or while accelerating onto a ramp, with the pedal giving no response. Several say the engine quit entirely and had to be restarted, and a few report a fuel-injector replacement followed by the same symptom returning. In some cases the dealer could not duplicate the fault or found no stored codes. Reported from a few thousand miles up to about 100,000, with many clustered between 4,000 and 60,000 miles.

Recall 25V796000Recall 22V7460002 related service bulletins

What to check: Ask for the service history on fuel injectors and any transmission/powertrain recall work, and check whether open recall campaigns have been completed. A test drive that includes a hard acceleration onto a highway ramp may help surface hesitation.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“First owner, sporadic acceleration problems reported from approx 6k miles. Documented with dealership.. “couldn’t reproduce” issue every time I brought it in after an occurrence. Dangerous when entering highway, as I never knew when it would fail/stall. Eventually broke down on busy interstate highway, replaced 1 fuel injector, and guilt tripped me into “needing” to have fuel injector cleaning because the others might fail as well. 27k miles was the first breakdown. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11666438, filed 2025-06

“When driving on a highway and wanting to pass a car in front of me at around 70 mph, I depress the accelerate pedal, and the car suddenly lost the power and decrease the speed. I quickly floored the pedal, but nothing happened, nor did the tachometer revs up. Have to pull over on the shoulder and shift from Drive to Park, and from Park to Drive again, the problem solved. There were no warning light or error messages showed during the whole process. Almost got rear ended by the car behind me.”

    NHTSA complaint #11503855, filed 2023-01
  2. Fuel system

Fuel injector failure (misfire, rough running)

    • 12 complaints (13%)
    • typically at 3.1 yrs old
    • filed 2024–2025

Complaints describe jerking, shaking, rough running, poor fuel economy, and a gasoline smell, which dealers have diagnosed as leaking or failed fuel injectors and replaced. Several owners say the repair was done more than once on the same car, and a few mention the dealer also recommended injector cleaning for the remaining injectors. Service bulletins for the 2.5L non-turbo engine describe internal injector filter breakage causing misfire codes. Often reported at low mileage, in some cases under 5,000 miles, and recurring in the 30,000-60,000 mile range.

    Recall 21V5240002 related service bulletins

What to check: Ask whether injectors have been replaced and keep records if they have; watch for rough idle, a fuel smell, or falling fuel economy after purchase.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“My car has been experiencing air defects when it would randomly stop working. Last month my car air stopped working after I picked my pet up from the groomers and all together on the service road my car shut down. After being towed to Hyundai dealership I was being demanded that I ride on E and that it could’ve been my fuel injector. After realizing it was not that they claimed it was a failed fuel pump. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11604047, filed 2024-07

“My 2022 Sonata has had to have its fuel injectors replaced two times in the 3 years I've had it. On 12/18/2025 My car started to become very slow and could not reach over 20mph, and started to smell like gasoline and shake slightly. I had to get it towed to the hyundai dealership and there they told me that the fuel injectors need replacing. I had the same exact problem with this car before where I had to get the car towed to hyundai and then they had to replace the fuel injector.”

    NHTSA complaint #11706285, filed 2025-12
  3. Fuel system

Fuel tank expansion and fuel-system faults

    • 14 complaints (15%)
    • median 92,000 mi at 4.4 yrs old (5 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2025–2026

Owners describe the fuel tank deforming or expanding, a strong gasoline smell, difficulty refueling, and in some cases the tank contacting other parts of the car. Some say the tank was diagnosed as needing replacement, and others report the problem returning after a recall repair. A service campaign covers a check-valve and fuel-tank inspection with an ECU update for a related diagnostic code. Reported from roughly 50,000 to 140,000 miles, with several complaints filed after the recall notice was received.

    Recall 25V7960003 related service bulletins

What to check: Confirm by VIN whether the fuel-tank recall and any related service campaign were completed, and ask for the paperwork. Smell around the filler neck and look for a bulging or deformed tank before buying.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“My 2022 Hyundai Sonata Limited had a recall issued on the vehicle. I took my vehicle to a dealership and the recall issue was taken care for my fuel tank. Months after this issue was supposedly resolved, my fuel tank exploded and the car has been totaled.”

    NHTSA complaint #11711052, filed 2026-01

“The fuel tank assembly became pressurized with compressed air due top worn purge control system check valve. This caused the tank to deform and the deformation of the tank led to the fuel pump being pushed out and the back seat of the car was completely unattached and no longer secured. There was a strong presence of gas smell in the car as well. The check engine light came on and the car began to drive poorly. It was taken directly to a Hyundai dealership where it remains as of today. …”

  4. Transmission and drivetrain

Jerky or harsh transmission shifting, gear changes

    • 13 complaints (14%)
    • median 3,800 mi at 1.1 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2022–2024

Owners describe hard or delayed shifts, particularly between first and second gear and on downshifts, along with hesitation when accelerating. Some report the car shifting into the wrong gear on its own or lurching at a stop. Dealers have applied transmission control software updates or replaced components in some cases. Mostly reported under 30,000 miles, often within the first couple of years of ownership.

    Recall 22V7460003 related service bulletins

What to check: Ask whether the transmission control software update has been applied, and drive at low speed in stop-and-go conditions to feel for hard or delayed shifts.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“In September 2022 I was driving the car and suddenly kept changing from sports to normal without by itself and then it slows down till engine went off, second incident happened the same exact thing in 17 June 2023, it came out that this issue from Manufacture and I don’t trust this model anymore it became life threatening”

    NHTSA complaint #11527730, filed 2023-06

“On multiple occasions, the car has intermittent acceleration issues and hesitates when the automatic transmission is shifting to the next gear. Without warning, the car completely turned off - engine failed - while driving and in the middle of making a turn, and luckily oncoming traffic stopped in time before we were in an accident. The local dealer has been unable to replicate the problem; however, there is an open recall on the same make and model but my VIN is not currently included in this recall. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11494231, filed 2022-11
  5. Electrical system

Electrical faults: warning lights, blower motor

    • 6 complaints (6%)
    • median 70,000 mi at 4.6 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2022–2026

Complaints describe the climate-control blower stopping, in one case with a melted fuse, and several owners report warning lights or loss of function from the junction box affecting locking, lights, and trunk release. Others mention repeated trouble codes and interrupted connected-service features. Service bulletins cover junction-box wiring repair and infotainment software updates. Reported from a few thousand miles to around 70,000 miles, with blower and wiring complaints tending to appear at higher mileage.

    4 related service bulletins

What to check: Check that all interior electronics, the blower fan on every speed, power locks, and the trunk release work. Ask whether the junction-box or infotainment software bulletins were applied.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“The BlueLink subscription service for my Hyundai Sonata includes a feature to see the diagnostic codes my car has or has had. Attached is a document with all of the DTCs my car has reported since I purchased it new in November of 2021. There are 15 stored codes (not active) but they are still concerning to me because they have appeared from before the car was built to about 1000 miles after I purchased it. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11494350, filed 2022-11

“The car will not lock, the signal lights do not function, I cannot open gas door, cannot unlock trunk. I took the care to the service center and they just told me it was the junction box. I saw there was a major recall to this same car for this same problem with 2016. If this is a manufacture issue I think it should be covered by warranty but they are refusing to fix without me filing an insurance claim. My car has been inoperable since June. …”

Buying note. This model year has a wide range of reported symptoms, and many complaints center on fuel-system and stalling behavior, so verify recall and service-campaign completion by VIN and ask for the full repair history before buying. A thorough test drive covering highway acceleration, low-speed shifting, and all electronics is worthwhile.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? NHTSA recorded 95 consumer complaints for the 2022 Hyundai Sonata. 15 of the complaints include a mileage, and 53% of those were filed for vehicles with under 50,000 miles; the median is 31,000 miles. Of all complaints, 8 involved a crash, 1 a fire, 5 an injury, according to the filers. NHTSA lists 3 recall campaigns and 81 technical service bulletins for this model year. Compared with the other 15 Hyundai Sonata model years that have at least 25 complaints and are old enough to compare, this one scores 20 out of 100, where 50 is a typical year for the model (fewer complaints than typical for this model). The comparison allows for the era and for how long each year has had to collect complaints, but not for how many vehicles were sold.
