Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“The service engine light has come on several times since I purchased the car. When I would go into the dealer, they would inform me that the light came on because I did not close the gas tank tight enough. After I was told this, I made sure to close the gas tank tightly. The light still continued to come on. Now the car is not under warranty and the dealer told me it would cost about $1,500 to fix the check engine light problem. I think the problem was identified early on, but the dealer was not able to fix the problem.”

“Service engine soon (light) came on. Dealer ran diagnostic and said the engine computer software needs to be upgraded . This is a cost to me for $112. Why should consumer have to pay for a software upgrade. This is a manufacturer defect. The manufacturer should have to incur the cost of repair. Nothing is broken and nothing needs to be fixed. The software will get rid of the engine light and will allow the car owner to see any potential problems (I.e. What if the software is not upgraded and the engine light remains on. …”

NHTSA complaint #10056166, filed 2004-01, 68,000 miles

“Keyless entry malfunctions intermittently and has done so since delivery of the vehicle. When malfunctioning the keyless entry does not respond as it should to the remote unit(s) and one needs to press the remote unit several to many times before door will unlock / lock or panic alarm sound. Position or distance in relation to the vehicle does not seem to make a difference, nor does weather conditions, location where parked or if vehicle is cold or warm. All occurred outdoors. In between malfunctions, it works fine. …”
