What owners report

Owners of this model year most often describe check engine lights tied to ignition coil and sensor faults, and frame or cross member rust under the radiator. Other common reports include unintended acceleration or surging when shifting or braking, brake rotors that warp repeatedly, and airbags that did not deploy in collisions. Ignition coil complaints mostly come from lower-mileage cars, while rust complaints appear above about 100,000 miles.

  1. Electrical system

Ignition coil faults and persistent check engine light

    • 9 complaints (18%)
    • median 16,068 mi at 6.2 yrs old (9 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2005–2012

Owners describe the service engine light returning or staying on after repairs, with rough idle and ignition-related or high-voltage fault codes. Complaints describe repeated repair attempts, such as replacing spark plugs, ignition coils, and a crank sensor, and in some cases the light stayed on afterward. According to complaints, dealers sometimes said a sensor or coil needed replacement, and some owners paid for repairs because the vehicle was out of warranty. Mostly reported under about 35,000 miles, with a report near 160,000 miles.

What to check: Ask whether the check engine light was diagnosed with stored codes, and whether any ignition coils or spark plugs were replaced while the light remained on. Ask the seller for records of coil or sensor repairs.

  2. Vehicle speed control

Unintended acceleration or surge when shifting or braking

    • 6 complaints (12%)
    • median 73,870 mi at 10.0 yrs old (4 state mileage, few)
    • 2 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2000–2015

Owners describe the vehicle surging or accelerating while the brake is pressed or after shifting into drive or reverse, sometimes with the engine racing. A complaint says the car would not stop at low speed or tried to accelerate in reverse while the brake was held. In some complaints, owners stopped the car by applying heavy brake pressure or by turning the engine off, and a dealer was unable to replicate an incident. Where listed, mileage is about 33,300 to 80,600 miles, and other complaints give no mileage.

What to check: On a test drive, check how the vehicle responds when shifting from reverse to drive with the brake pressed, and when stopping on a slope. Ask the seller whether any dealer diagnosis for unintended acceleration or idle surge was recorded.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“1) driving at about 10 MPH car would not stop. After swerving around the car in front of me, I was able to stop the car. Afterwards, car stopped ok. 2) on same day, when parking, car in reverse, and my foot on brake, car tried to accelerate for a few seconds. Afterwards operated ok.”

    NHTSA complaint #10135355, filed 2005-09, 33,300 miles

“Pulled into a parking space. Had to back up to get aligned. Vehicle was fully stopped with the right foot on the brake pedal. Shifted from r through n to d. Vehicle surged forward at very high rpms. Right foot was still on the brake pedal. Put heavy pressure on the brake and shifted to n and stopped the vehicle over the curb and about 3 ft onto the sidewalk. Total distance moved, approx 6 ft. Put the vehicle into reverse and parked. Drove home and had the vehicle towed to the dealer. …”

  3. Body and structure

Frame, cross member and radiator support rust

    • 5 complaints (10%)
    • median 170,000 mi at 13.5 yrs old (3 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2010–2018

Owners describe rust weakening the frame or the cross member under the radiator, which supports the engine, with some parts sagging or moving by hand. Complaints describe a loud noise from the hood or belts, and say the rusted support could drop the engine. According to complaints, in some cases the dealer had not inspected or repaired the vehicle, and an owner was quoted for replacing the rusted frame part. Reported at about 100,000 miles or more, with listed mileage up to about 279,000 miles.

What to check: Look under the front of the car at the radiator support, cross member, and frame rails for rust, and have a mechanic check whether any support moves by hand. Ask the seller whether any frame or engine mount repair has been done.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“While working under my car, I noticed that the support structure under the radiator is rusting badly and can be moved by hand. This is not safe and appears to be a potentially dangerous situation. I came across similar complaints about the same model of nissan Infiniti. I feel that since this is definitely a safety issue, the company should warn owners and recall the vehicles for repair at no cost to the owners. This is premature rusting and appears to be vital to the engine stability as well. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11066211, filed 2018-02, 279,000 miles

“I took my car to the mechanic for a loud noise coming from the hood. The mechanic later found out that the noise was coming from belts because the support bar that hold the engine was sagging. This is called the cross member. I learned that the cross member had rusted prematurely. I have also learned that this is a common issue with every I30 model. Infiniti needs to have these support bars replaced before it causes an accident. Ps. …”

  4. Brakes

Warped brake rotors with vibration and judder

    • 6 complaints (12%)
    • median 21,640 mi at 5.0 yrs old (2 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2001–2006

Owners describe brake rotors warping repeatedly, with resurfacing or replacement and the problem returning, sometimes with vibration at highway speed or a shudder when braking. Some describe steering vibration or braking hesitation, and a complaint describes all rotors being replaced after resurfacing. According to complaints, dealers resurfaced or replaced the rotors more than once, and a dealer attributed a braking hesitation to dust. Mileage in complaints that list it runs from about 15,000 to 62,000 miles, and some give no mileage.

    2 related service bulletins

What to check: Ask whether the brake rotors have been resurfaced before and check their thickness against the minimum specification. Ask for brake service records, and check for vibration when braking from highway speed on a test drive.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Vehicle rotors have warped four times needing resurfacing each time. This problem happens every fifteen thousand miles. This is not normal. The first time they warped was at 15,281 miles, then at 32,555,49,767 now the problem has surfaced again at 61,434 miles. Does the resurfacing of the rotors compromise the strength of the rotors? How many times can this be done?”

    NHTSA complaint #10007940, filed 2003-02, 15,281 miles

“When braking theres a hesitation. Took vehicle to dealer, and they stated it was dust. Year later, dealer stated that rotors needed to be turned. Dealer turned rotors, and 15000 miles later, rotor needed to be turned again. Please provide any furthr information.”

    NHTSA complaint #8003463, filed 2002-02
  5. Air bags

Airbags did not deploy in collisions

Mentioned in 4 of 44 sampled complaints

Owners describe airbags that did not deploy during collisions, including head-on and T-bone impacts. A complaint describes the car sped out of control after a front tire blew and the airbags did not deploy when it struck a building. Another complaint says the airbag failed to activate after the car accelerated unexpectedly while shifting into drive. Where mileage is listed, it is about 61,000 to 200,000 miles, and other complaints give no mileage.

What to check: Ask whether the airbag system has been scanned for stored codes, and confirm the airbag warning light turns off normally after startup. Ask the seller whether any crash or airbag inspection has been recorded for the vehicle.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“The passenger front tire blew, the car then locked up, the steering wheel locked up, the car sped out of control (police estimated up to 70 miles per hour), the car ran into a brick building. The air bags did not deploy! I woke up surrounded by a crowd of people. Although, I pressed the brakes to the floor, and there were black marks on the parking lot leading up to the car inside the brick building, the car continued to accelerate, out of control.”

    NHTSA complaint #10747285, filed 2015-08, 200,000 miles

“While driving at 10 MPH vehicle was hit head on by another vehicle at 45 MPH. Upon impact, neither driver's side nor passenger's side air bags deployed. Driver sustained injuries.”

    NHTSA complaint #10050407, filed 2003-12, 61,000 miles

Buying note. Buyers considering this model year may want to check the frame and radiator support for rust, confirm that the ignition coil and check engine light complaints were properly diagnosed, and test the brakes for vibration. Asking about unintended acceleration and airbag function during a test drive or inspection can also help.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 44 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Engine cooling: “2000 infinity i30t : from forums on internet, it seems that there is a common problem with the exhaust system on this model. There is a code p0420 that indicates a problem with the bank 1 catalytic converter. Infinity states that because the catalytic converter is enclosed in a front tube assembly , it is not covered under the 80,000 mile warranty. I have replaced the rear cat, o2 sensors, mass air sensor and engine coils. The p0420 code was also worked on before we owned the car at 29,000 miles.”

NHTSA complaint #10180957, filed 2007-01, 78,000 miles

Exterior lighting: “When the headlights are on at night and using the turn signal, when the turn signal cancels after a turn, the headlights turn off briefly then come back on. An online search has shown that the 2000-2003 nissan maxima and Infiniti I30 is affected by this.”
