Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“While driving my 2001 Jeep Cherokee I had small objects fall off my center arm rest and hit my gen 3 seat belt latch causing it to open. This has happened twice. I have noticed that Jeep has upgraded to the gen 4 latch. Why hasn't there been a recall on this issue? Every day seems to bring a new story of another fatal accident involving a daimler chrysler product with a faulty seat belt latch.”

NHTSA complaint #10010397, filed 2003-03, 23,500 miles

“Safety belt retractors do not function consistently, belts hang in door opening and become caught in the latch/strike assembly when the doors are closed. This causes damage to the belt, requiring replacement. I have owned several chrysler products (dodge dart, plymouth reliant, 2 cherokees and other) and all have exhibited this problem.”

NHTSA complaint #10210298, filed 2007-11, 100 miles

“The stock seat belts located in the rear seat of the vehicle do not lock in order to properly and safely install child safety seats. This is not a one time thing as they will not secure after being fully extended. I have already contacted a dealer after finding an old recall but was told they would not fix as they didn't know what I was speaking of.”

NHTSA complaint #11310104, filed 2020-02

“The seat belts did not fail, but the belt would catch on the door latch and was rubbing holes into the belt. Jeep was contacted about this problem on 2/14/01, they called and said that it was a design flaw but until more complaints were received, they would do nothing about it. Demontrond was also advised about the problem, but I was told that for them to look at it, it would cost me for them to look at it. The Jeep has been traded.”

NHTSA complaint #747635, filed 2001-07

“While driving at 50mph on highway and after a front collision with another vehicle consumer was thrown out of vehicle 60 feet while wearing seat belt.”

NHTSA complaint #8006883, filed 2002-04
