“My parents bought the car as a certified / pre-owned when it was 6 months old. Within the past six months the Town Car will suddenly try to accelerate, (or the engine will run up to the redline on the tachometer.) it will literally spin the back tires while both the drivers feet are on the brake pedal. We are contacting the dealer this week. This is getting more and more often.”

NHTSA complaint #10614667, filed 2014-07, 31,000 miles

“I put the car in reverse to backup. Then, with my foot on the brake, I place the car into drive goes forward. It continues forward for about a car length before it stops. The car has done this on several occasions. I fear for my life.”

NHTSA complaint #10870858, filed 2016-05, 90,000 miles

“I own a 2006 Lincoln Town Car, purchased new. Approximately once or twice per year the vehicle will try to accelerate as I am braking for a red light or a stop sign. Placing transmission into neutral position seems to result in engine slowing down. Taken to Lincoln-mercury dealership in 3/07 and 4/10. They can not duplicate the problem and they state that they can not explain what is causing this.”

NHTSA complaint #10327313, filed 2010-04, 23,055 miles

“The contact owns a 2006 Lincoln Town Car. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, he was unable to shift into the intended gear. The contact stated that the gear shifter had seized. The contact stated the steering shaft was maneuvered until the gear shifter unlocked. There was an unknown warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the local dealer was contacted; however, no assistance was provided. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000.”

NHTSA complaint #11590333, filed 2024-05, 91,000 miles

“Our 2006 Lincoln Town Car, with 3,500 miles, has a significant safety defect. When on an incline, facing downhill, the car will roll forward while in reverse. In addition, if the car is facing uphill in drive, it will roll backwards. The car will reach speeds of 6 MPH rolling in the opposite direction of what gear the automatic transmission is in. We have had several near accidents trying to exit parking lots. Ford states they specifically designed this into the vehicle in order to have it pass emissions testing (they reduced the idle speed and altered the performance of the torque converter). …”
