“Acclerator cable snapped on heavy accleration into traffic. Snapped just in back of engine connection. Replaced cable less than a year ago, because the one that was on the car when we bought is did exactly the same thing. We were lucky both times not to be in an accident!”
NHTSA complaint #733727, filed 2000-10“Used cruise control and could not get cruise to turn off. Tried braking and turning off cruise. Had to brake and put in park and turn off car. When car was restarted, car still acted like cruise was on. Finally felt accelerator pop loose. Car is still running at 1200 rpms at stop lights. Jumps to 2000 rpms when in park. Initial contact with dealer was via mail due to business trip. Will be contacting dealer tomorrow. Have had several problems with this car. Many of my problems are similar to ones I found on the service bulletins on this web site.”
NHTSA complaint #725173, filed 2000-07“White smoke and odor came from windshield wiper/cruise control/ignition switch area of the steering column. Cruise control and turn indicators acted eraticly. I stopped vehicle and shut off engine. Then restarted vehicle and proceded to dealership. Smoke came and went during trip. A steering column fire would be very dangerous in a moving vehicle, especially on a freeway.”
NHTSA complaint #742497, filed 2001-03“While driving on the highway and tryingto pass another vehicle, the vehicle started decelerating and lost speed, could not pass the vehicle. The vehicle went 10mph instead of 30 miles. Took to dealership and the mechanic said that the throttle cable was broke.”
NHTSA complaint #823366, filed 1998-05“The accelerator cable (connects gas pedal to carburetor) broke when the accelerator was depressed in an attempt to speed up and merge with traffic. This has happened on a total of three occassion, the first time in may, 1996 with 35878 miles on the car, the secong in july, 1997 with 61000 miles on the car and the third time in august, 1999 with 97000 miles on the car. All 3 incidents occurred on a freeway at freeway speeds while attempting to speed up so as to merge with traffic.”
