“On July 22, 2025, at about 6:30 PM in a western suburb of Illinois, on a hot, humid, sunny evening after my car had sat in direct sun all day, my 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range (Dual Motor AWD) suffered a total electrical failure. As I walked up, the car unlocked automatically with my phone key as usual. I placed my dog in the back seat, closed that door, and immediately tried to open the driver’s/front door—but it would not open. The phone key failed, and the backup key card at the B-pillar also failed to unlock the car. …”
NHTSA complaint #11694211, filed 2025-10, 42,678 miles“I was driving on the highway and the frunk came off breaking the front shield. The frunk was still showing as closed on the computer, but the screws came off releasing the frunk. Luckily I was able to react appropriately and move the car to the shoulder of the highway but the incident could’ve caused death. Visibility was zero as the front shield was obstructed by the open frunk”
NHTSA complaint #11531131, filed 2023-07“on July 19, 2025 my 10-year old daughter entered the back seat and shut the door. When I (her mother) went to get into the drivers door the electricity in the car completely shut down locking my daughter in the vehicle. There were no visible icons or labels showing where the emergency/manual latch was. She was hystercial and heating up quickly. We called Tesla roadside assistance and the agent spent 10-15 minutes explaining how to get out of a Model 3 (we had a model Y). He then proceeded to tell us that he did not know how to advise her how to get out. …”

The contact stated that after parking the vehicle, the contact noticed that the front hood lid had opened unintentionally. The contact stated that the failure occurred on several occasions. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving and attempting to brake, the regenerative braking system malfunctioned, causing the braking distance to be extended. NHTSA complaint #11622413, filed 2024-10, 6,000 miles“The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving 20-25 MPH, the hood unexpectedly opened, struck the windshield, and obstructed the visibility of the road. The contact was able to pull into a parking lot. The contact stated that while attempting to close the hood, he noticed that the hood struts were completely damaged. The contact removed the struts and closed the hood manually. The vehicle was taken to a Tesla Service Center, where the contact was informed that the vehicle data recorder was missing information on the failure. …”
