“2023 Tesla Model Y has frequent phantom braking issues when using cruise control. Let me clarify I am not using any sort of auto-pilot or self driving options. I am simply using cruise control. The incidents that cause many braking issues are unjustified to the point I have no idea what the Tesla may have recognized to make it slam on brakes. Very dangerous”

NHTSA complaint #11612070, filed 2024-09

“Pulled into hospital parking garage. Stopped to pull parking ticket. When the parking gate was raised, Tesla immediately took off at very high uncontrolled speed. Basically a runaway vehicle. There was no accerlation on my part. Brakes did not work. Hit parked car in the garage about 300 feet from the parking gate. I was taken to hospital with broken wrist. Car has been totaled.”

NHTSA complaint #11697204, filed 2025-11

“The cruise control has been braking for no apparent reason, putting myself and the people behind me at risk. It also tried to stop at multiple green lights rather than continue driving. The his also outs me, my passengers and people behind me at risk. There were no warnings about this behavior. I have the latest update and will also contact Tesla about the issue.”

NHTSA complaint #11564220, filed 2024-01

“Car was on TACC. It was early evening so the sun was making a lot of shadows on the road from trees. Car kept repeatedly slamming on the brakes approaching each tree shadow. The road was absolutely clear of any real hazard. Almost caused car behind me to collide into the back of me, and then they passed me while honking and very angry. I can't blame them.”

NHTSA complaint #11550322, filed 2023-10

“I was driving on a 2 lane road with cruise control engaged (not full auto pilot). As I approached an intersection with an oncoming semi-truck, the vehicle slammed on the emergency braking system slowing from 60 mph to 45 mph in about 30 feet. I think it is called phantom braking. I was driving into the sun at 2:45pm.”
