Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“Car has been swerving violently around curved roads. The alignment was thrown out of specification by broken coil springs. All other components such as ball joints tie rods wheel bearings... Were found to be within spec. Coil springs were both found broken, and unevenly. One coil was missing more coils than the other. If the coils had broken in a different place or there had been traffic a fatal collision could have occurred.”

NHTSA complaint #10597444, filed 2014-06, 170,000 miles

“The left front wheel spring was severed into 2 pieces while the car was parked. The left front tire was subsequently punctured. Replacement required springs and shocks on both sides as well as ball bearings and a new tire on left side. Also front end reallignment. Fortunately, the vehicle was parked at time this happened or could have caused serious accident with possible injuries and loss of life. I am troubled because of the age of the vehicle and low miles. I have never experienced such a problem on any vehicle I have owned.”

NHTSA complaint #720702, filed 2000-03

“1995 4 cylinder Camry that has a thumping noise when the driver and passenger window buttons pressed to lower the windows.**cc upon acceleration, the pedal seemed to go about 1/2 to 1 inch before the transmission engaged. The transmission slipped at lower speeds when accelerating or trying to maneuver in a parking lot. The consumer stated it happens sporadically when making a right or left turn.”

NHTSA complaint #10186844, filed 2007-03

“Left wheel spring broke on vehicle and punctured the tire. As the consumer attempted to drive the vehicle, she noticed a flat tire. The consumer's son tried to fix the tire, when he noticed the left front wheel spring had broken which had punctured the tire. The mechanic stated the front wheel, springs, and the tire needed to be replaced along with the wheel which needed to be aligned.”

NHTSA complaint #10025043, filed 2003-06
