Example complaints

Engine: “I was driving in the rain using the windshield wipers came to a stop and the engine start stop. The engine stopped and a warning sign came on saying the engine is stopped. \ power fluid low/ The steering wheel also would not turn. I had to put my hazard lights on, put the car in park and then restart the car.. this could be dangerous if I had been on the freeway.”

NHTSA complaint #11648370, filed 2025-03

Other or unknown: “I had this issue 2 times so far, and I thought I was crazy since it hasn't happened since, but I noticed another report of someone else having the exact same issue. This prompted me to include my own report, as this could be a fatal flaw that needs review immediately. While I was pulling out into traffic from a stop sign to cross multiple lanes, my engine on my 2022 Corolla Cross XLE shut off without any warning. I was stopped at the stop sign, which the engine shut off as it's designed to. …”

NHTSA complaint #11614474, filed 2024-09

Electrical system: “While driving the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross on the highway, my car’s dashboard indicated a warning stating “12-Volt Battery Charging; System Malfunction Stop in a Safe Place; See Owner’s Manual.” I immediately got off the highway and called Toyota Roadside Assistance to get the car towed to the dealership. I was informed the following day, the Corolla Cross is not putting out enough battery to its alternator, and causing the car to not be safe to drive. To this date, the car is still in the dealership after 70+ days and I have logged a formal complaint with Toyota directly. …”

NHTSA complaint #11575285, filed 2024-03

Transmission and drivetrain: “When driving in the rain and my start/stop function is turned on, my car will turn off and make a loud beep with a message stating “engine stopped steering power low”. The check engine light and the power steering light pop up on the dashboard and I have to restart the car. This happens in the middle of traffic and is scary to think that it can happen any time while I’m driving. My car has less than 15,000 miles on it. This has happened numerous times, but more and more frequently lately.”
