Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“I was involved in a frontal collision in which I rear-ended another vehicle. The impact was significant enough to cause a fractured sternum due to the seat belt restraint. However, the front airbags did not deploy. I had a passenger in the vehicle, and we were both wearing our seatbelts at the time of the crash. I am concerned that the airbags failed to deploy despite the severity of the impact and the resulting injury. I believe this may indicate a defect in the airbag system or the airbag control unit (ACU). …”

NHTSA complaint #11691040, filed 2025-10

“I was rear-ended and the Vehicle Alert displayed airbag malfunction. This was a car rental I reported to insurance company. It advised to inspect car immediately.”

NHTSA complaint #11723968, filed 2026-03

“Driver side knee bolster airbag did not inflate correctly resulting in impact of lower leg to airbag hatch door and under dash area. Driver and passenger seatbelts flung open during accident. Driver hit top of thigh against steering wheel. No safety recalls per VIN search. No warning lamps, messages, or symptoms proof to accident.”

NHTSA complaint #11733797, filed 2026-04

“Got into a collision and the air bags did not deploy when they should have. There was a recall 2 weeks prior to the accident but no notification. This was a safety risk in the accident when the air bags did not deploy”

NHTSA complaint #11532279, filed 2023-07
