Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“Smell the odor of gasoline at times around the car. Very lucky no fire. Found two pin wholes that only leak when the fuel vapor pressure inside the tank comes up. One pin whole slightly to the driver's side of the exhaust pipe but spraying toward the exhaust pipe. The other pin hole is above the exhaust pipe heat shield spraying onto the body and draining down on to the exhaust pipe heat shield. Purchased car new, never been in an accident, no road damage to tank, never operated in a salt environment, no rust. Just found today -- have not repaired.”

NHTSA complaint #10257001, filed 2009-01, 150,000 miles

“Second fuel tank that will be replaced in 8 months is petruding outward instead of inward. Also, indentations on tank causes it to rupture, cracks formed . Consumer took vehicle to an independent mechanic due to smelling gasoline and noticing a leak from outside of vehicle. Mechanic was contacting Toyota because of not having an explanation of why the problem reoccurred. Please provide more information.”

NHTSA complaint #8009882, filed 2002-05

“Second incident of gas tank leaking. First leak was welded by personal mechanic. He indicated a separate component was rubbing on the gas tank, causing a hole to form. Since the exhaust system is located in such close proximity to the fuel tank, a severe fire hazard exists, which could become life threatening.”

NHTSA complaint #724519, filed 2000-06

“Gas tank seam split causing fuel to not drip but stream down onto exhuast pipe , car has been driven approximantly 30-40 miles aday under this circumstance until found, it a wonder that the vehicle did not catch fire or explode, was unawear of this problem until notice of gas on driveway, had been smelling gas ever since the motor was replaced in the vehicle at 43,000 at which point the motor had a thrown rod and was replaced by dealer, during the replacement the host that was used to replace motor leaked causing the new motor to fall into the car , thus crushing the oil pan, not sure if…”
