“My automobile is a 2000 Toyota Corolla. I was driving on an ordinary road at perhaps 35 - 40 miles per hour when there was a sudden loud bang and my driver's side window exploded into hundreds of pieces scattering glass onto my lap and into the interior of the car. I did not hit a bump and did not see any other vehicles that could have thrown a stone against the window. I drove a short distance back to my home and called the police because I thought that I might have been hit by a bullet. The investigating officer stated that this occurs occasionally as a spontaneous event. …”

NHTSA complaint #10086886, filed 2004-08

“Drivng at 30mph in no construction no construction equipment around, no chip in windshield no previous crack. Noticed while driving a small crack develop on windshield next to the right molding toward the bottom. Instantly it traveled staight across all the way over to the left side window molding. The window itself feels brittle like junk! Ive been driving for over 40 years and had many different cars in many different conditions, and never have I seen a crack shoot across my windshield when nothing hit it, or had no previous crack.”
