“2006 Toyota RAV4 with 51,000 miles: my daughter was driving the vehicle on a major highway going 70 MPH (the speed limit) and all of a sudden all the lights came on in the dash and car died, left my daughter stranded on a major highway. Had it towed and it was an engine failure. Yes, engine failed at 51,000 miles. Out of warranty and Toyota won't do a thing about it.”

NHTSA complaint #11053367, filed 2017-12, 51,307 miles

“Bad acceleration, engine will not pick up fast, if I try to accelerate engine sounds high, the car will not pick up the speed up for few seconds and it jumps in the track. All engine lights came, vehicle lost the power and I lost control over the vehicle,I had to stop in freeway and call tow truck.this car burns oil so fast every 1000 miles I have to put new oil on this car.”

NHTSA complaint #10944426, filed 2017-01, 10 miles

“I took my vehicle in for a recall. The technician found it was low on oil and filled it. Two weeks later I had my mechanic check and it was low 2 quarts of oil. I set my trip odometer. It has been 2000 miles and I have had to add 4 quarts of oil to my engine. I am told this excessive oil consumption is due to bad pistons that will need to be changed. I understand this to be a costly repair.”

NHTSA complaint #11006476, filed 2017-07, 140,000 miles

“Excessive oil consumption my car's engine is burning excessive amounts of oil. While I've had the problem for years, it is getting significantly worse and I have been adding oil multiple times between my scheduled services. Since I am aware of the issue I've been diligent about checking my levels, but I found out it was an issue when my car turned off while I was driving (I was lucky to have been in a parking lot at the time).”

NHTSA complaint #10965948, filed 2017-03, 99,009 miles

“The engine for my 2006 Toyota is burning oil rapidly. I have about 115,000 miles and was hoping that this car would at least last me another 5 years. The dealership is telling me that my engine needs an engine overhaul which will cost about $3,000. I make sure to take care of my car and bring it for an oil change when it's due.”
