Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“My airbag light came on for no apparent reason. There was a recall for other Toyota tacomas for an air bag spiral assembly however my model was not included. I took the truck to a Toyota dealer who informed me that the cable and connections were rusty and the air bag would not function in a crash unless the assembly was replaced. I paid out of pocket to have the cable replaced.”

NHTSA complaint #11354076, filed 2020-09, 180,000 miles

“I was turning into a parking lot thank goodness when the whole steering column fell in my lap. I have pictures of what it looked like when I got out and had it towed. Toyota said they were not at fault it was from a fender bender in november.... And when my insurance company went to look at it they said it was a manufacturer defect. How many steering columns come out driving with no accident.”

NHTSA complaint #10606526, filed 2014-06, 50,000 miles

“Steering seizes while driving making it nearly impossible to steer. This is extremely dangerous as I have been stuck in a turning position while entering traffic. I narrowly avoided being struck on my drivers side by oncoming traffic.”

NHTSA complaint #11091906, filed 2018-05, 50,000 miles

“The steering was very stiff on my Tacoma. I found that it is due to rust forming on the universal joint in the intermediate steering shaft. I found online that this is a common/known issue.”

NHTSA complaint #11149563, filed 2018-11, 30,000 miles

“The vehicle's steering became very stiff on tight turns and would not recenter itself after a turn. It was not consistent. At times the steering was normal, but another 1/4 turn of the steering wheel would be very difficult. It was diagnosed as a faulty steering intermediate shaft. A poorly designed part allowed the universal joint to fail.”
