Example complaints

Air bags: “The contact owns a 2006 Bmw 328XI. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated and remained illuminated when a passenger was occupying the seat. The dealer advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number 08v384000 (air bags). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 115,183 and the current mileage was 120,400.”

NHTSA complaint #10562645, filed 2014-02, 115,183 miles

Brakes: “After almost four years of ownership the brake became hard and didn't want to depress upon starting. Since you have to depress the brake to start the car, this created hard starting problems. It seems to be linked to cold weather and a cold car (when the car hasn't been operated for a while). The dealer performed a repair per a technical service bulletin and implied this would fix the problem. When it didn't they first contacted Bmw of north america, then told me they couldn't duplicate the problem and this was normal operation for the car. Incredibly insulting. …”

NHTSA complaint #10325606, filed 2010-04, 33,000 miles

Electrical system: “Door locks became unresponsive, either when activated via the key fob or the internal door unlock button. Doors are unable to be opened from the outside and the inside. Presents a significant safety threat. Only the driver's door is opens.”

NHTSA complaint #10459027, filed 2012-05, 18,000 miles

Other or unknown: “The contact owned a 2006 BMW 328XI. The contact stated while his son was driving approximately 50 MPH on a slick road, the vehicle made a loud boom sound. There were no warning lights on the instrument panel. The driver depressed the brake pedal and the vehicle skidded into a telephone pole where the front of the vehicle caught on fire. All air bags deployed. The vehicle was destroyed by fire and the origin was unknown. The driver pulled the passenger out while the vehicle was on fire. The passenger sustained a concussion and was required to be hospitalized for a few days. …”
