Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“Every time I get in the vehicle or turn the vehicle off I get a message Secure vehicle against rolling contact service specialist . Even if I press the emergency brake it still continues, this appears to be a known problem with the BMW X1 and not sure if it will cause my car to roll away.”

NHTSA complaint #11691848, filed 2025-10

“I am reporting a recurring safety warning on my 2017 BMW X1 xDrive28i. The vehicle repeatedly displays the message “Secure vehicle against rolling” on the dashboard even though the gear selector indicates that the vehicle is in Park. A diagnostic scan with BlueDriver also recorded BMW fault code 420106 – “Shift Lock Solenoid: Unlock stuck.” The warning has returned multiple times and appears to indicate a problem with the vehicle’s Park/shift-lock or parking-lock recognition system. …”

NHTSA complaint #11762954, filed 2026-09

“7/19/2022 I got a drivetrain warning. Turned car off and on and it cleared the warning but now I am getting a secure vehicle against rolling notice every time I turn car off. This appears to be the same problem with other BMW X 1s.”

NHTSA complaint #11474794, filed 2022-07

“Warning light appears: Secure Vehicle Against Rolling Error. I went online to see what the issue was and found that there were numerous complaints by BMW X1 owners who discovered that it was a $10 spring in the shifter that dealers were charging between $2,000 and $3,000 to repair. Many opted not to do the repair due to the excessive cost, a decision that could prove catastrophic for some. In the likely event that your agency is already aware of this problem, I am writing to add my name to the list of complaints in the hope that NHTSA investigates and perhaps orders a recall.”

NHTSA complaint #11442658, filed 2021-12

“The vehicle has started displaying an error message when parking stating to secure the vehicle against rolling. This is due to a very common issue with a spring in the shifter needing to be replaced. Based on what I have read, the spring issue is occurring in almost all 2016 and 2017 bmw x1's. This should be a recall and not a $3k repair bill.”
