Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“While pulling out on to the main street from a residential housing area, both lanes clear of on coming traffic..dry/sunny day.....12 noon saturday....as I pulled out I saw 60 yards ahead traffic in my lane was stopped for a vehicle 3-4 cars ahead of me making a left hand turn. My speed was under 25 MPH and when I went to apply the brakes my 1999 Suburban 2wd would not stop. I applied my brakes well in advance of the stopped vehicles, but my Suburban continued to move forward with little or not stoppage. …”

NHTSA complaint #10087033, filed 2004-08, 96,437 miles

“While driving slowly or fast, at different times, and not every single time, turning to the right around a curve or turning a corner the steering holds the turn and then all of a sudden lets go of that hold. I can correct it by slightly turning the steering wheel left and then back into the turn. Sometimes it holds the second time and sometimes it lets go again. This is repeated until the end of the curve or turn. Steering gear, pitman arm, steering pump all replaced and problem still is present.”

NHTSA complaint #10041777, filed 2003-10, 95,000 miles

“Three days after purchasing vehicle, and after using the lighter, power locks stopped working. Rear hatch would not open nor would the lighter work. Dealership was notified and the problem was fixed. It was supposedly a short in the wiring. Approximately 1 month later the same problem occurred after the lighter was used, this will be the second attempt to repair the vehicle.”

NHTSA complaint #717131, filed 2000-01

“Vehicle has had several major component failures since time of purchase, the electrical system failed whereas it left us stranded twice with a no start condition, then the brakes started to excessively squeek and pull, then the brake wore out prematurely, then the vehicle started to pull to the right excessively and drift, eventually pulling to the right when brakes applied, then the power steering system had gone out while driving, it has been outrageous that these problems are occurring on a new vehicle.”
