“I was stopped at a traffic light and when I accelerated the spare tire hoist cable broke due to fraying causing the spare tire to fall from underneath the truck. The driver behind me ran over the spare. Fortunately, I had just began to pull off so speed was not a factor and there was no damage to the other vehicle or person.”
NHTSA complaint #10379888, filed 2011-02, 186,000 miles“While driving at 55 MPH in heavy (bumper to bumper) traffic on a 4 lane highway, I had a gut feeling to get off that main road so, I took a right onto a small country road. Not even a mile down the road there was a loud thump from the back of the Tahoe - sounded as though the bumper fell off and hit the road. Looked through my rearview mirror and saw something shoot straight back (would have been even with a car's windshield) and the thing curved up and went oven an embankment. …”
NHTSA complaint #10621829, filed 2014-08, 50,000 miles“I was on the 10 freeway going approximately 70 MPH, I felt my car starting to shake. I moved over to the slow lane and at that time the tire tread on my left rear tire came completely off and did significant damage to the left rear side. I called aaa to have the tire changed and when the technician arrived he check the air pressure which was 37 lbs. My spare was placed on my vehicle and I drove home. I contacted americas tire co. …”
NHTSA complaint #10233855, filed 2008-07, 102,445 miles“Spare tire missing. I believe the cable snapped and the spare tire fell off while vehicle was in motion creating a danger to other vehicles. I do not know if this caused a crash or injury to other drivers. I do not have a date of the incident.”
NHTSA complaint #10247576, filed 2008-11, 64,000 miles“In the last two months, I have had three flat tires. The first was a completely shredded on the freeway at speeds 65 MPH. Costco replaced the tire, which was only 7 months old on may 3, 2004. A month later, sometime in june, a second flat, on the freeway. Costco claimed it was a nail. They said they patched it up and sent us on our way. The third flat, just yesterday on july 18, another flat. We took this tire and to another tire shop and they said it is a problem with the valve stem. …”
