Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“On several occasions I have unintentionally pressed the accelerator pedal in addition to pressing the brake pedal. The brake pedal is 2 inches higher (closer to the driver) than the accelerator pedal in its full up position. When attempting to quickly place my foot on top of the brake pedal from the accelerator pedal, my foot hits the side of the brake pedal. This issue has resulted in several near-hit accidents with a vehicle in front of me. The rapid acceleration of the Ford Lightning reduces response time to correct the braking disruption. …”

NHTSA complaint #11565294, filed 2024-01

“On May 25, 2023 I was stopped at a red light with one car in front of me. My foot was not on brake because i use the one peddle feature. All of the sudden, my car accelerated and ran into the car in front of me. In the 2 seconds before hitting car, I saw my collision assistant light go on but there was no braking at all. I've been driving for almost 40 years and nothing like this has ever happened. Clearly, something internally with the sensors or computer system malfunctioned. Fortunately, nobody was injured but I can't imagine if a pedestrian was in front of me. …”

NHTSA complaint #11524748, filed 2023-05

“Runaway Throttle at least 8 times now: 1. Driving in adaptive cruise control when deactivated by manual braking (to turn into a parking lot, which is a more common scenario for a brake based shutoff) 2. Parked nose first and shut off the truck 3. Start truck and reverse out of parking space 4. Shift to drive, apply throttle gently and truck continues to accelerate when throttle released requiring a PANICKED brake application”

NHTSA complaint #11568000, filed 2024-01

“When using one pedal drive modes going down an incline as a slow rate of speed say 2 - 3 mph. If you release your foot from the pedal the truck will come to a spot, then reverse 3 - 6 on that incline. This has cause on more then one occasion almost back into a vehicle that was behind me.”

NHTSA complaint #11543257, filed 2023-09

“The contact owns a 2022 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while the contact's wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle independently accelerated. The contact stated that the vehicle was in line at the car wash when the failure occurred. The vehicle re-ended the vehicle in front, which caused several vehicles to crash into one another. In addition, the vehicle bounced off the curve and crashed into two other parked vehicles before landing on the side of one of the vehicles. The contact stated that the whole incident happened in about five seconds. …”
