What owners report

Owners of the 2022 F-150 Lightning most often report two things: the rear tailgate light bar taking on water and failing, and high-voltage battery or powertrain faults that drop the truck into reduced power. Lighting complaints frequently return even after the recall repair was performed, and battery-related complaints tend to appear at relatively low mileage. A smaller but recurring group describes unexpected acceleration or cruise-control behavior.

  1. Exterior lighting

Rear light bar takes on water, reverse lights fail

    • 31 complaints (34%)
    • median 20,275 mi at 3.1 yrs old (4 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2023–2026

Complaints describe moisture collecting inside the rear tailgate light bar, after which the reverse lamps flicker, dim, or stop working altogether; some also note the brake light segment flashing randomly. Many owners say the bar was already replaced under a prior lighting recall and that the replacement developed the same moisture problem again. According to complaints, dealers have sometimes called the moisture normal or declined a second replacement, and parts availability has delayed repairs in some cases. Reported across a wide mileage range, from under 1,000 miles to about 38,000 miles, often within a year or two of the previous light bar replacement.

What to check: Inspect the rear light bar for condensation or water droplets and confirm both reverse lamps and brake lights work. Ask whether the light bar was replaced under the earlier lighting recall and when.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“The rear light bar and reversing lamp assembly, which was part of a safety recall, is filled with water and the lights are malfunctioning again. Ford is telling me that the replacement part has a 1 year warranty so that I would have to pay over $1600 for a replacement. This is a widespread issue with many of these trucks. Ford admitted that it was a manufacturing defect with the original part. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11659840, filed 2025-05

“I have a 22 f150 lightning lariat with a tailgate light bar that is taking on water. As of now the lights are flickering and burning out. The water may be shorting out the lights and could be a safety issue. I have read on lightning forum sights about other owners with the same issues.”

  2. Electrical system

High-voltage battery fault and reduced power

    • 20 complaints (22%)
    • median 7,000 mi at 1.5 yrs old (2 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2022–2026

Owners describe warnings such as "High Voltage Battery Warning" or "Powertrain Malfunction / Reduced Power" appearing while driving, followed by the truck dropping to very low speed or refusing to move. Several complaints state that a battery module was diagnosed as failed and replaced under a Ford customer program, while others report repeat warnings after repairs and long waits for parts or service. A few describe the vehicle shutting down and requiring a tow after being parked. Mostly reported at low mileage, often under about 25,000 miles, and in some cases within the first year of ownership.

Recall 25V131000Recall 25V2720004 related service bulletins

What to check: Ask for the service history on high-voltage battery module replacements and any related campaigns, and confirm no stored battery or powertrain fault codes remain.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“without any prior indicators, truck lost power, could not exceed 2 mph either forward or reverse - battery malfunction - wasn't an emergency I had to go somewhere but if it was I would have been SOL as the vehicle is totally undriveable - dealer has it now for service - only 6 months old and under warranty - reading online F150 forums this is not a unique problem”

    NHTSA complaint #11503166, filed 2023-01

“I’ve had 11 times back at the dealer to fix my airbag, pre-collision and battery. Ford can’t figure out the solution and keeps throwing parts at it. Already replaced my computer, computers, my wiring, harnesses, my charge port, my wiring harness for the charge port, my seat cushion for the airbags. Ford no longer knows how to fix the problem And is leaving the truck in the backyard for over six weeks now. …”

  3. Vehicle speed control

Unexpected acceleration or cruise control behavior

    • 11 complaints (12%)
    • median 13,000 mi at 1.8 yrs old (2 state mileage, few)
    • 2 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2023–2024

Owners report the truck accelerating on its own, in a few cases in low-speed settings such as a parking lot or car wash line, and cruise control engaging or stepping up speed unexpectedly. Some complaints describe the adaptive cruise or hands-free driving assist failing to slow for traffic or drifting out of its lane. Complaints note that dealers were sometimes unable to duplicate the condition and that software updates did not always change the behavior. Reported at low to moderate mileage, often in low-speed maneuvers or while driver-assist features were active.

    2 related service bulletins

What to check: Test the cruise control and driver-assist features at low speed in a safe area, and ask whether the adaptive cruise control customer satisfaction program and related software updates were completed.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“While in Adaptive Cruise and self driving the Lightening, dangrously crosses lines and rides too close to the right side. This results in other drivers actively swerving off the road to avoid a collision as well as intervention by me. I have videos of all of the following occurring while operating the vehicle: 1. Riding and crossing the right line (white and dotted when passing) 2. Vehicle crossing the double center lines into oncoming traffic 3. …”

“On May 25, 2023 I was stopped at a red light with one car in front of me. My foot was not on brake because i use the one peddle feature. All of the sudden, my car accelerated and ran into the car in front of me. In the 2 seconds before hitting car, I saw my collision assistant light go on but there was no braking at all. I've been driving for almost 40 years and nothing like this has ever happened. Clearly, something internally with the sensors or computer system malfunctioned. …”

  4. Electrical system

Instrument cluster and screens going blank

Mentioned in 4 of 60 sampled complaints

Complaints describe the instrument panel or center display going completely black while driving, leaving no speed, battery state, or other readouts visible. Some owners say restarting the truck restores the display and that it recurs intermittently over months. Others mention infotainment screen freezes and software-related glitches that dealers addressed with updates. Reported from shortly after delivery through higher mileages, typically as an intermittent fault rather than a one-time event.

What to check: Ask whether the latest SYNC and module software updates have been applied, and check that the cluster and center screen power up and stay on during a test drive.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“After starting the truck the instrument panel was illuminated as I saw that the parking brake was on. After less than 1 mile of driving, the entire panel was black and no speed, battery, temperature, or other information was displayed. We parked the car as soon as we could without further incident”

    NHTSA complaint #11590487, filed 2024-05

“Instrument cluster screen goes completed black while driving. This happened once every couple months. Turning off the car and restarting it seems to fix the issue.”

Buying note. Check the rear light bar carefully for moisture and confirm whether it has already been replaced, and ask for the battery module and software service history. Verify that the open recalls for the light bar, park module, and stability control software have been completed on the specific truck.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? Example complaints

Electrical system: “I placed groceries in my front trunk “Frunk” and they shifted while trying to leave. Once shifted they hit the emergency release button inside the frunk which opened the frunk hood unexpectedly. These should be covered or less accessible inside the frunk.”

NHTSA complaint #11561207, filed 2023-12

Exterior lighting: “Front driver side turn signal fails to signal randomly. From the instrument panel, I see the turn signal flashing 2x as fast like the bulb is out and it appears the amber light isn't flashing in the headlight. This continues for the entire duration of the drive, but the next several drive it works OK. Drivers can't see which way I'm turning when it's failed.”

NHTSA complaint #11512155, filed 2023-03

Transmission and drivetrain: “During a long road trip my truck displayed a message stating that I had a Powertrain Malfunction/ Reduced Power. My truck, while driving, reduced itself to half power. It also would not charge. I was 3 states away from home when this happened. I took the vehicle to my Ford dealership once I was able to get it home. The technician simply cleared a code and said that the issue could not be replicated. Clearly there is an issue. I know several people with the same issue. Frankly, I don't think that I can trust my new truck a significant distance from my residence.”

NHTSA complaint #11565136, filed 2024-01

Forward collision avoidance: “The adaptive cruise control is supposed to adapt to the speed of the vehicle in front of you as well as adapt to the posted speed limits as they change. When driving on the highway, the adaptive cruise control will read the exit ramp speed limit while you are driving through on the highway and immediately drop. So while driving at the posted 65 mph my truck drops down to 25 mph. This has strangely happened on occasion when driving under an overpass - my speed dropped from 65 mph to 45 mph. This happens with no warning. You cannot predict when it will happen. …”
