Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“I just found my second aluminum wheel cracked. I have a 2000 Ford f350 4x4 dually with oem aluminum wheels. I had one crack about a year ago and I replaced it. So this is the second one I have found cracked. The crack goes into on one of the 5 spokes with a crack starting into another. If I had not found either crack, it could caused a crash or injury.”

NHTSA complaint #10212461, filed 2007-12, 224,605 miles

“As we were returning home from a road trip, we heard a screeching noise coming from the left wheel well area when we made wide sweeping turns and highway curves. We pulled over and, upon inspection, saw our original alloy wheel on our truck was cracked. One of the wheels was dangerously close to coming off the hub. Photos document how severe the cracking of the wheels was - three of four wheels were found to have cracks and chucks of metal missing, compromising the integrity of the wheels and the safety of our vehicle. We had to purchase new wheels at a cost of almost $1,300.”

NHTSA complaint #10761675, filed 2015-09, 156,300 miles

“The cast aluminum wheels on the f350 Ford super duty dully can break, and did on my truck. The wheels are not strong enough to support the weight of the truck with the 7.3 liter diesel engine. If the front wheel breaks on this truck on the highway at normal speeds someone is going to die. My truck weighs just short of 8,000 lbs. It has never been driven off road and never been abused, such as pot holes, curbs, and that sort of thing. I did file a report with Ford mtr. Company and their comment was we will put your complaint on file and notify the engineers. …”

NHTSA complaint #10242484, filed 2008-09, 197,000 miles

“- the contact owns a 2000 Ford f-350, and stated that the two front rims cracked to the point that they won't hold any air. There weren't any dents, and he had not driven over a curb or hit any potholes that would have caused the rims to crack. The contact could provide pictures if needed. The failure mileage was 119000, and the current mileage was 122000 miles. Updated 03/30/07.”

NHTSA complaint #10183942, filed 2007-03, 119,000 miles

“The contact owns a 2000 Ford F-350 SD. The contact stated that the front passenger wheel was cracked. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 224,430 and the current mileage 224,455.”
