Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“The front passenger side airbag malfunctioned in that it deployed without reason. I was driving (in motion) straight down a city road. It made an extremely loud noise that affected my hearing, expelled a lot of white powder that smelled bad, and tore up the side of the passenger seat. The airbag warning light went on.”

NHTSA complaint #10865523, filed 2016-05, 156,300 miles

“Rear wheel bearings are wearing out on vehicle. The automatic transmission does not shift properly, the consumer discovered the wrong transmission fluid was in the vehicle. The front windshield cracked due to excessive heat. The rear seat latch, the seat fabric and the key ignition failed. The windshield wipers wore out, which were only used about seven times and the rear brakes had to be replaced.”

NHTSA complaint #10040652, filed 2003-09, 26,000 miles

“The driver side front tire had blown out. The passenger side tire was found worn on the inside along with an exposed wire. (these two tires were not of the same manufacturer) other problem were as followed: the button on the cassette player had broken, the adjuster button for the side view mirror on the passenger side had popped off, while driving the over drive light flashed and the vehicle jumped in/out of over drive (transmission problem-per mechanic), the battery light came on, there were no fuses in the wires under the passenger seat, trunk lock popped off, A/C button light on the dash…”

NHTSA complaint #10014888, filed 2003-04, 1,000 miles

“Tested my brand new Focus rear seat release in the trunk and had trouble releasing the 60 of the 60/40 seat. When it did release, I had trouble securing the seat into the latch. The latch didn't seem lined up. Went to the dealer, waited on a new latch. The latch didn't fix it so they're going to try a new cable.”

NHTSA complaint #753980, filed 2001-11

“This complaint is being written to inform NHTSA about a potential failure I believe that my 2001 Ford Focus 4 door has lingering about in it. The potential failure is the back seat bottom (the part your rear end sits on) does not catch on the three lip edges attached to the car body. The metal base of the back seat bottom has three holes, one on each side and one in the middle. They correspond to the lip edges for which they do not catch on. I spoke with the general manager at the dealership regarding the issue after several attempts to get it fixed through the dealership service department. …”
