“Approx 10 minutes after I had gotten home I heard a noise and looked outside.. It was 1:20 a.m; I called the fire department because the whole front end of the truck had caught on fire. An explosion completely blew off the hood. The temperature of the fire was hot enough that the alternator had melted off of the truck itself. No injuries occurred from the fire. Fire is still under investigation.”

NHTSA complaint #10542846, filed 2013-09, 200,000 miles

“On 06/03/2013 at approximately 0830 hrs, my son was driving my 2000 Ford Ranger extended cab 4x4, taking his sister to the dentist office. While enroute the RPM gauge spiked to 5000 RPM's so he let off the gas and it went back to normal. He continued a short distance to the dentist office and as he was pulling into the parking lot, the vehicle lost all power and coasted to a stop. Just as the vehicle stopped, my daughter saw smoke coming from under the hood on the driver side so she exited the vehicle. …”

NHTSA complaint #10672301, filed 2015-01, 159,000 miles

“The engine was 'not right' one day so the hood was opened in the bank parking lot and it appeared to be overheated. The temperature gage did not indicate this but the radiator was indeed without water. The radiator was filled and later checked out at the shop. It was determined that the temperature gage was not accurate and an external gage was added (a separate gage not part of the dashboard). The engine was never the same and has since needed to be replaced (with a remanufactured) due to being overheated. This was preventable if the temperature sensor had been operating properly. …”

NHTSA complaint #10788767, filed 2015-11, 70,000 miles

“The contact owns a 2000 Ford Ranger. While driving at 70 MPH, the vehicle lost all acceleration without warning. The accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to respond. The service engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle could be restarted; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic throttle body needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 72,000.”
