“The rear frame crossmember rusted to the point where the spare tire it supports almost fell out. I noticed it was hanging about 6' low so I caught it before it fell. The entire part is horribly corroded. Note that the wood was temporarily installed to hold the steel up to drive home.”

NHTSA complaint #11402685, filed 2021-03, 171,500 miles

“Takata recall on my Ford Ranger underneath the truck where the frame is it has been completely eaten up by rust. My spair tire has fallen off because the frame is covered in rust. And the main body frame rust off and it's completely disconnected under the bed. My vehicle was in motion when I lost the spair tire”

NHTSA complaint #11138968, filed 2018-10, 85 miles

“Rear leaf-spring shackles and hangers on my 2006 Ford Ranger are rusted out, one of the shackles broke free from the frame while I was driving, made it harder to steer because the truck felt nowhere near as stable as it was before it broke, it caused me to swerve into the lane beside me which very well could have caused a serious accident if someone were to be there. …”

NHTSA complaint #10918444, filed 2016-10, 245,000 miles

“Severe rust entire back half of truck. First the spare tire fell off while driving and the evap canister was broken. The bed rotted out and my gas tank was in danger of falling off. The cross members broke while driving on a town dirt road causing the cross member to rub against the drive shaft. I had to use a cargo strap to hold up the gas tank so I could get home which luckily was only about a mile.”

NHTSA complaint #11032230, filed 2017-10, 100,000 miles

“Frame is rusted out will not pass inspection. Spare tire holder rusted out. Tire would have fallen out. Cross member rusted out. We have a metalworking shop and will weld and repair ourselves at great time and expense. Point of rustout is near where the front bracket is to hold the spring. Give e-mail and I can send pictures.”
